Catalytic refinery
Can someone explain that one to me? I've built the machine but it doesn't seem to be doing anything at all. I tried moving it around next to the blocks, next to the refineries and next to the source but to no avail.

You place it beside the resource blocks and when blocks get destroyed it increments a counter each time it hits 1024 resource it will award you the resource + a bonus depending on the counter (it resets if no resource is collected after a certain time.)

I got stuck in Celestial Foam phase for a while and spammed these all over I'm not sure how much they helped to be honest but I was slowly replacing some of my DH3 Miners with it /shrug

They don't seem like an essential item to progression afai could tell- more of a supplement.
I definitely use a lot of them after celestial foam to condense layouts. They essentially double your output per channel, if kept running 24/7.

My question though, does anyone know if they stack? I do use them as if they do, but I can't tell for sure and they don't show the 'energized' animation as if they would.

Stack, meaning 2 catalytic refineries overlapping blocks = original resources + cat 1 + cat 2 bonus. Know what I mean?

From what I've seen it looks like you are splitting the resources between the refineries by doing that. Essentially taking longer to get to the fill mark of 1024 materials. By not overlapping it would be more efficient since you are sending all materials to 1 and it can fill faster, cycle faster, and stay at the max bonus. If they aren't fully lit, you aren't getting the max bonus. Just what I've observed when overlapping.

they dont stack. It has to consume 1024 resources, so if you place a second one it will reduce the speed of the first by taking resources away.

This assumes that there is no limit to how fast one refinery can consume/release, and that the bonus goes from +0% -> +100% linearly
I figured so, the wording of the building description didn't specify one way or another so I had my hopes up.

Do these also work with gradient wells, or just exposed cubes?

They do not work with gradient wells since no resources are "destroyed" as per the building description. The good thing is that you absolutely won't need them once you get gradient wells. If you feel like it's going too slow with gradient wells, switch to void resonators and add industrial destabilizers.
