XBOX 360 Control Not Working

I just bought this game yesterday, per suggestion of a co-worker. From the very beginning the control wasn't working. He tried it on his laptop and it worked without a hitch. But when plugging the control into my laptop, the control would light up to show it was on, but wouldn't work. I couldn't even move to any of the menu buttons. After an hour of struggle and messing with the keybindings, the control managed to work. But when I exited and a few hours later, decided to play again, the control was once more not working. I've tried to mess with the keybindings but the control buttons won't work when trying to set them up. -.- I'm not sure if it's my control or the game being a jackass. But if anyone can help, that'd be great.

The control is Microsoft verified. It works with all other games but this one.

When you start the game in Steam, don't press any keyboard keys or move the mouse. Use the controller to get into the game's menu and use the controller to navigate the menu. If you press a keyboard key or move the mouse, the game thinks you are using mouse/keyboard (only) for input.
