Common issues, read before posting
Hi there. This post will hopefully contain the solution to the issue you are having.

Q: I get 'Ran Out of Video Memory' - why no goat?
A: If you are on a 32 bit operating system you can try to increase the virtual memory space to 3 GB. First open command prompt by pressing windows key and typing 'cmd'. Right click on the application and run click 'Run as administrator'. Once the command prompt opens up paste in the following command: bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072
NOTE: You need to restart your system for this to take effect.

Q: After downloading the 1.1 patch the game crashes on startup.
A: One common reason is that you've subscribed to Workshop items that are not compatible with the new version of the game. Make sure you Unsubscribe from all items and also remove them from MyDocuments\MyGames\GoatSim\GoatGame\Mods\Downloaded and also remove GoatMod.ini from MyDocuments\MyGames\GoatSim\GoatGame\Config.

Q: I changed the game to run in 64-bit mode and now it crashes/hangs/runs slow
A: The game does not gain anything from running in 64-bit. It performs worse and is more likely to crash. There is no reason to run the game in 64-bit. Before trying anything else, please switch back to 32-bit

Q: Every time I start the game it just minimizes!
A: Make sure you don't have Adobe Creative Cloud running in you System Tray. As we all know, Adobe loves to kill the joys of Goat Simulation.

Q: My game crashes every time I start it, what is wrong?
A: Well, we don't know your particular error. Most commonly it's because of out-dated drivers. So make sure you install all the latest drivers.

Q: My game still crashes after I updated my drivers, what is wrong?
A: Check your .logs that are located in %MY DOCUMENTS%\My Games\GoatSimulator\GoatGame\Logs. What does it say?

Q: My log says "This game requires at least Shader Model 3.0".
A: Your graphics card needs to have hardware support for Shader Model 3.0. There is nothing else to do but buy a new graphics card.

Q: My log says something about "Direct3DDevice->CreateVertexShader((DWORD*)&Code(0),(IDirect3DVertexShader9**)VertexShader.GetInitReference()) failed".
A: Try changing a setting in the ini files. Go to Documents\My Games\GoatSim\GoatGame\Config and open the GoatEngine.ini change the bInitializeShadersOnDemand=false that is in the section of [Engine.ISVHacks]. Change it to "bInitializeShadersOnDemand=True".

Q: My log says something about "Your video card does not support alpha blending with floating point render targets (D3DFMT_A16B16G16R16F), which is required to run this game. Exiting…"
A: Try changing a setting in the ini files. Go to Documents\My Games\GoatSim\GoatGame\Config and open the GoatSystemSettings.ini change the FloatingPointRenderTargets=True that is in the section of [SystemSettings]. Change it to "FloatingPointRenderTargets=False".

Q: I have no logs and the game just freezes when it says "Press the any key"?
A: Apparently Avast antivirus software won't let you be a Goat. We do not yet have a proper fix for this, disabling Avast doesn't solve the problem, but uninstalling does.

Q: I don't seem to have any of the above stated issues, but it crashes/can't start, what do I do
A: Describe the issue you are having. Post a link to your .log file from www.pastebin.com. Post your DxDiag link from pastebin. Obtain DxDiag by pressing Windows key + R and type "dxdiag" let it run for a little while and press Save Information.
Note: Reinstalling / Verifying the game cache is always a good step to take!

Q: I'm having issues installing the prerequisites, what can I do?
A: Try installing them manually, have a look here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8926-RYKC-6967

Q: The axis on my controller is inverted, how can I fix it?
A: Have a look at this guide written by a fellow goater:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/265930/discussions/1/522729901279582754/

Q: (Linux) The textures are missing, most objects shows up black, how can I fix it?
If the package libtxc-dxtn isn't installed the textures isn't loaded correctly and most objects becomes black. You can fix this by installing the missing package. If you're using Ubuntu, Linux Mint or any other Ubuntu based linux distribution you can install the package by typing this into the terminal:
sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386

Picked this up yesterday.

I get to the 'loading' screen where it shows keys and has the gears in the lower right hand corner. At this point it freezes and my mouse cursor appears, pressing a key causes the game to close. There are no error messages and no logs.

Hey hey it's me again, finally kept playing the game because it's just too good. There's an issue in the MMO Simulator part: I can't complete the "Dobomination" quest for unknown reasons. I tried killing the 5 dodos, putting them in my inventory and then dropping them on the circle — nothing happened. I tried killing them and then bringing them with my tongue, nothing happened. I tried headbutting them, pushing them with my front legs, even bringing them alive and killing them on the spot — you guessed it, nothing happened. All other quests seem fine and I can complete them without any problem. I tried with the tank, the magician, the hunter, even the microwave... the quest seems incompletable (if that's even a word).

Here's a screenshot of me with the 5 dead dodos on the magic circle and nothing happening. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=423251831

You should read the point about 32 bit operating systems, not that is the issue you ar ehaving right now, but its an issue you will how down the line.

The issue that you are currently having sounds like 3rd party software playing in, like avast or adobe creative cloud, for a more complete list of programs that interfere with steam games have a look here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

Game freeze when loading game
Bought this game for my daughter and eveytime we start the game, it freezes on loading screen and we need to shut down computer. I did read a lot of threads and test a lot but now im getting really annoyed by the situation and her who keeps screaming cause she wants to play the damn goat. We have nearly an hour in "played time" and thats only from testing stuff and not actual playing.

DXDiag Specs http://pastebin.com/Bj9rYTgy

Using a AMD Radeon and i also tried a Geforce and still freeze

There's nothing running in background, No anti-virus, No anti-spyware/malware
There's no adobe cloud or stuff like this in Process, only usual Windows things
I checked integrity game cache
Windows is up to date
All drivers are up to date
I tried to go in Documents\My Games\GoatSim\GoatGame\Config and open GoatSystemSettings.ini to add the native resolution to 1280x1024 (she doesnt have a wide screen monitor).

I probably tried more things but i've been on this for 5 hours straight and im tired of all this. Hopefully someone can help me so my daughter can shut up about it ;)

Sorry its not working out for you, I know it troubleshooting can be frustrating.

What I'm seeing from your dxdiag is that you are on a 32 bit operating system and that you are right on the mark with available RAM, so I'm not sure if the fix below will work for you, but give it a go:

If you are on a 32 bit operating system you can try to increase the virtual memory space to 3 GB. First open command prompt by pressing windows key and typing 'cmd'. Right click on the application and run click 'Run as administrator'. Once the command prompt opens up paste in the following command: bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072
NOTE: You need to restart your system for this to take effect.

Unfortunately optimizing the game is an ongoing process for us, which means that there are corner cases where the game should be running, but it doesn't, your situation might be one of those corner cases.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried the 'cmd' fix.
I have none of the programs running that are mentioned.
I have tried editing the resolution.
I have tried verifying the cache.
I have tried reinstalling.

I am very frustrated as I bought this for my son (originally posted from 'his' steam account) and it's all my fault that it won't work! 3 hours I spent troubleshooting on Saturday morning...

Still no luck, game still makes the computer crash on the loading screen and need to be reset to reboot.

Not really as the issue is most likely on your end, and while I can suggest common solutions I can only attempt to guess what your issue is.

Make sure all drivers are up to date, try running the executable manually ( Steam\steamapps\common\GoatSimulator\Binaries\Win32\GoatGame-Win32-Shipping.exe ), try installing the prerequisites manually, they can be found here: \Steam\SteamApps\common\GoatSimulator\_CommonRedist\
run the DXSETUP.exe in _CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010.
run the dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe in _CommonRedist\DotNet\4.0
and run the vcredist_x64.exe or x84 depending on your computer is 64-bit or not, in _CommonRedist\vcredist\2010
