-Minecraft
A game that is good to play with friends where you can build things essentially.
-Psychonauts
A 3d platformer where the main character travels into and explores peoples minds to save his friends. It's got a great story. It's a little bit aged though. (released in 05)
-Any of the lego games: Lego Batman, Lego LOTR, Lego Indiana Jones, Lego star wars (I'm sure there are more)
Basically they are 3d games where you just go through the story, solving puzzles. It's also a good game that you can play with him, if you wish to.
-Any need for speed game, but I'd imagine that he'd prefer the arcade-ey ones, like Most Wanted, Rivals, Hot Pursuit.
They are racing games.
Also going to add:
Minecraft should hold his attention the longest, especially if he has friends that play it.
theres modifications and an option on the multiplayer that makes the game fits for children.
And he's 9. The whole point of the discussion was to find stuff that was rated for younger kids.
Pyschonauts is a wonderful game, and the lego games are amazing. The lego games in particular are made to be replayed, so they will provide a lot of value for your child.
Garrys mod is a good game but seriously, no 9 year old child should witness
