The first DLC was free and that added a crap load of content onto it. The first paid DLC was the GoatZ, I haven't got that so I can't attest to the quality/quantity of the DLC, however it seems to have positive feedback. Then they released the I am bread/Goat Simulator DLC, which was a free update. Now they are releasing a paid DLC with payday. That's not counting all the smaller free updates they've made in between.
In my head, coffee stain studios didn't explicitly say they were doing free DLC, and maybe it's manipulative and clever word play from CSS or maybe their message was miscommunicated in that article. End of the day, they are game devs, they are working full time and therefore need to cover the costs of running a game studio. It might shock people but it's not a case of (some) devs wanting to work for money, it's because they NEED to work for money (even says in the article that DLC costs money and time). I think goat simulator was well worth the price I bought it for, I also think all the free content they've provided for the game surpasses the price of the DLCs.
Even if they did say they would never do paid DLC, they are at liberty to change that. Not everyone can foresee what the future looks like and how well/bad a game/studio is doing. If you don't like it, don't buy it, simple as. It seems that everyone feels so self-entitled nowadays...
OVERKILL also told there would be no microtransaction in their game. Yet they added them.
I'll comment on this (I kinda should since I wrote the article, heh)
Back when we released Goat Simulator, we were really happy that so many people bought our game, so we wanted to add some free stuff for you as a thanks. It was our most successful game ever, so we wanted to give back to the community.
We released Goat Simulator 1.1 (the city-map, as it's known), and Goat MMO Simulator for free. We planned on Goat MMO Simulator being the last thing we did with Goat Simulator, but after we released it, we had tons of people who asked us to keep making DLC for the game, and that they'd be willing to pay a few bucks for the costs of developing it. So after some planning, we decided to listen to people's suggestions and try releasing some paid DLC in the future.
With that said, even if you don't buy the new DLCs, the only thing that you won't be able to play will be the actual new maps. You'll still be able to use the new assets in making Workshop maps, and you'll be able to play Workshop maps that people have made with the new DLC content. So hopefully, people who don't buy the DLC will still be able to have some fun for free :)
We still like to experiment a bit with free and paid content. The MMO expansion was free, the 1.1 update was free, and the Bread thing was free as well, so to pay for those development costs we need to do some paid DLCs as well. I think a mix is fair for both the developers and the players.
I haven't saw many requesting paid DLCs.
Many MAYBE okay to pay for them to "support", but not directly asking for DLCs or supporting the ideology.
Specially when the DLC is half the price of the game. It's not an expansion pack.
Complain.
How are the DLCs they've released not been expansion packs? Each one has added a new map, new things to do, new achievements, and new modifications for the goat.
Most true expansion pack actually have much more than a map and only a few things to do.
