¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Figured people would classify it as dumb fun, but if it actually helps you with your anxiety issues, more power to you. It's actually good to hear the game benefit someone with that sort of issue.

Wasn't even in the nominees though.
Woah the post pruning going on in this forum is nuts- I'm outta here before I get needlessly banned.
P.S: ive deleted my earlier comment which was quoted because i misread the topic and thought it was talking about the steam awards, when its not. good job, me.
I'm just glad that Doom got the award it deserved honestly.
"Boom Boom[en.wiktionary.org]" trophy is Apt for the new Doom.
Since 'Boom Boom' is a term for taking a crap.
P.S: i apologize if this comment wasnt organized or something like that, im bored and i sincerely dont care enough to waste more time organizing this.
I may as well add my own explanation then:
Think of something like Red Dead Redemption, right? Pretty freaking buggy game. Very good, but very, very buggy. And the bugs get CRAZY, like endless horses raining out of a tree (I didnt make that one up), that sort of crazy. And then think of the sorts of players that really enjoyed just running around and doing crazy stuff with glitches. Or doing the same with Skyrim (which is also buggy as all heck), simply because they find it really entertaining. That sort of player is who this game is for, and there's quite alot of gamers like that out there. That type of player tends to be able to have fun just for the sake of having fun. They like finding hilarious things to do and see, and new ways to break parts of the game.
It's not a matter of being old VS young, or being casual VS hardcore either. I play mostly hardcore games myself (and I mean the nasty sorts, like Cave's bullet-hell games for instance), and I'm an adult, too. But I've still got 70 hours or so on this game because, simply put, it's just darned fun, and there's plenty to do in it. Quite alot to do, actually. I just dont tire of it.
And the important thing about the glitches is that they are JUST the funny sort; anything that genuinely interferes with gameplay (like crashing or something causing massive slowdown or whatever) is always removed. I've barely ever seen it do that stuff. Much of the game's bugs, you have to intentionally trigger them to work (which is of course extremely easy to do).
Add in all the maps, and the 10 quintillion unlockable mutators (seriously, there's ALOT of these) and really, there's alot of content here. And some of the unlockables and achievements are actually pretty hard to do; I can think of some that I"ve tried before and STILL havent gotten, because argh. I'll get the bloody things eventually.
Overall though, I know alot of gamers these days have this idea that games must always be serious and such, but... games dont always need a big long story or complicated mechanics or whatever. Games are supposed to be fun, after all, and this game is strictly that: Something fun to mess around with. I find it a very nice change from the usual sorts of games I play, and a great way to unwind.
It's not for everyone, definitely not. Some people just wont "get it". And that's fine. Alot of games are like that, if you really think about it. But for those of us that have put a large amount of hours into it, well, that's some of the reasoning (at least from my view). It's also a matter of sense of humor... humor is a VERY subjective thing, after all. I personally think the game is freaking hilarious. But not everyone will. And that's fine too.
Actually that shouldnt be happening. I've done that before, but I've never once had the game crash as a result (hell, I cant remember the last time I've seen it crash whatsoever). I have ALOT of mutators unlocked at this point (the things that change your goat or give it different powers, there are TONS of them even just in the base game) and even if I turn them all on, nothing will happen in terms of crashing or performance. Certain mutators may not entirely activate (because some are inherantly incompatible with others) but no combination I've ever seen has ever caused a crash. Weird goat-related behavior, yes, but not a crash.
This might actually be worth a bug report if anyone else is seeing this. Crashes of any sort are exactly the type of glitches they DONT allow here.
The only time I see performance issues is if I really overuse some effect that actually spawns things (spawning too many things at once will eventually overload any game, after all).
Anyway, I can understand why people enjoy it, it's cathartic and stupid, and can play to the random side of humor very well (not saying it's a bad thing, seeing buggy mechanics and the like can be really entertaining. I can't count how many times myself and a friend have lost our sanity, laughing over silly bugs in games like Payday 2, TF2 etc.) it's just the overall style of the gameplay, comedy, randomness, and how it's intentionally buggy just..don't really sit well with me. Which, as anyone reasonable can agree, is a total non-issue. Not everything can, or will, play to your likes and you can't expect that.
As far as games not taking themselves seriously; I'm all for that. One of the reasons I enjoy TF2 so much is the comedic, cartoony, unrealistic nature of the game, allowing you to both play the game seriously, try out goofy strategies (which seem to work on the basis that noone sees it coming) or can literally sit around and be friendly with the enemy team. I guess it's just that I feel the game is a bit lazy, and that it's more-or-less youtuber bait. Something that Pewdiepie, Markiplier, Jacksepticeye and the like just yell their reactions to... But then that comes back to; if they weren't enjoying it, they wouldn't be playing it, so that argument sorta falls flat.
I will also add; my initial post, while keeping it civil and expressing my actual feelings about the game and Coffee stain studios as a whole, was fueled by a little bit of salt, that the game won the steam award over more thematic games, that I think would offer a more engaging experience . But that's what the community voted for, and as much as people can be unhappy with the results, gotta respect it.
---------------------------------------
All that aside, I have to thank you all for your responses, keeping it civil, sharing your own insight to why this game has the popularity that it does. In the event that someone else responds, I may reply again, but to all else: Wish you all the best of luck in the coming year.
* It's fun sometimes to rack up pointless achievements that don't involve blood or drama
* It's a glitch thing: Real or faked, they amuse me
* I loved being able to beat up Michael Bay's Ninja Turtles
* I love real tree goats so much I have a whole 2017 calendar of them
* It's like GTA only I can play it in front of the kids
* The kids love the game in fact & help me do things like raise buried pyramids from the ground
* Licking something/someone & having it stick to my tongue is awesome
* Mindless property destruction is cathartic after a long day in retail, especially at holiday season
* A goat in a warrior costume that can Shout like the Dragonborn
* When you get bored with being a goat you can be other things, like a dolphin in a wheelchair
* You can't lose
That said, I can't believe I've spent nearly 30 hours licking things and destroying the landscape.
