A game set in space on a 2d plane?
That seems silly as hell.

Eve was sorta 2d. The horrible way the controls are it's more or less 3d on a 2d control system.

It worked very well for Empire at War (and numerous other strategy games), but then again I don't see it working at all for a much less complex game like this.

Just watched the trailer and came into the forums to see if i noticed it right. It just seems off and very silly, looks like a bumper car ride in the trailer. At least give some sense of 3d movement in space. Anyways, 2d space has put me off of trying it.
classic style space game from i have seen. i miss these kind of games. cant think offhand what it reminds me of but i always like the space trade/defend/takeover type. i have tried a few of the mentioned games as well but didnt find much interest in the control of ship even if it was in 3d.

the only games i have ever seen control 3d like it should be was Descent and MS Combat Simulator, but that was many years ago. at least in those you had master control of ship and the physics were qute realistic. here is space though, there is no resistance so the rule of equal and opposite forces act/react in the proper way.

never was fond of arcade style fighters where i truly love the simulation based ones. hack and slash games were just as bad with unrealistic moves that no human could ever do physically.

without a gfx options section its truly hard to grasp the 2d engine being my gpu is not up to par. i do not believe its a 2d vs 3d situation rather a reponsive control issue. the game could be quite fun even on the 2d plane. again MS Combat Simulation imo was true 3d control but the 2d aspect of space games never bothered me much.

Try X3: Albion Prelude if you like trading, defending and taking over.
These are called 4x games wich also remind me of these old games but better.
X3: Albion Prelude is the best space 4x out there in my opinion at the moment.
It can be simple but also complex.
Depends on what you want to do in the game since you can basicly do whatever.
Build a trading empire, Trade solo, Pirate, play as police, etc etc

No, EVE is completely 3D. The controls aren't horrible. They're *STARSHIP* controls. Your ship is enourmous and has a ton of mass and momentum, it's not a nimble space fighter.

It's fully 3D. The only reason it seems "2D" is because most major locations in a star system are along the plane of the ecliptic where everything orbits: Planets, stations, stargates. They have to be there, that's how orbital mechanics works. The stations and stargates, etc, etc, all have to be there because the planets that they orbit around are there, and having an anecliptic orbit (which a few rare objects do) is a great way to get shredded by high speed impacts as your orbit intersects everyone else's.

It's the same way in real life. Everything we've ever launched out into the solar system had to travel along the plane of the ecliptic, except for Voyager 1, which we caused to leave it deliberately, becuase it's never coming back.

I bet you never even played EVE Online before by claiming that.
Or failed to play it since EVE is a game with a learning curve and requires patience.
Been playing EVE Online since Beta/2003 and still do and it has never ever been 2D.
Don't make accusations when the problem is your own eyes and/or imagination.
Thats what I love about EVE Online.
Less kids and stupid people and a high abundance of smart and intellectual people.

might be aging myself here but i remember the BBS days where everything was complete text. for me i dont find it needs to be in 3d but it must have some story to tell or maybe a mission of sorts. mainly why this game caught my attention. i need something i can play on a low-end laptop though because my much more powerful desktop is dead.

so true our own galaxy is a plane as well. i am looking more for the old school style of scavenging for materials and recycling old ships into usable materials. it doesnt have to be 3d for me to enjoy it. i will however try it on my desktop as soon as i can pay for the repairs just to see what it has to offer. most all graphics cards have much better 2d performance than 3d anyways. i would rather see gameplay and game content than just pure glorious graphics with none of the prior mentioned. without gameplay and content, all the graphics in the world wouldnt do much for me.

thanks for the suggestions btw. i have been away from doing any real computing for a while now. been so darn busy i hardly have enough time to do what i need to outside the gaming environment. i used to program long long ago, and truly not much has changed with the exception of more powerful processors. the basic concept is almost literally the exact same comcept.

dev already said they were working on graphics settings in which if playable on this machine i am likely to invest in it. also i would add that i really dont like playing in immature settings as most of the games here have. i would rather play with intellect and peaceful arenas. thanks again for your input.

Don't get me wrong lol I also enjoyed black and white or even black and green text adventures on 5.25 floppys.
But with a game like this and the screenshots and the age we live in now we just expect something that is made for the PC's of this era.
I can imagine this game being nice if you have no expectations set.
But I and most others do hence the reason why they are disappointed by the gameplay.

Btw if you really like old space games with content and even 2D then I highyl recommend a free game called Naev.
Here the link to its webpage: http://blog.naev.org/
Naev stand for Not Another Escape Velocity.
Escape Velocity was an awesome 2D space game where you could fight and trade and buy and customize ships.
But AmbrosiaSW only launched it for MacOS.
They had a windows version of the latest EV Nova but it was a bit buggy.
Naev has all that the original game had but adds more.
I think you will really like it.

Another game which you might really like is OPENTTD.
It's a remake of also an awesome game called Transport Tycoon Deluxe.
Which is a game where you build your own transport company.
Here is the link: http://www.openttd.org/en/

Both games I still play although rarely.
Mostly when my internet connection is out due to maintaince or so.
Or when I grab an old laptop or PC for that retro feeling.
I have spend hours/days/weeks/monhs/years on those 2 games and still enjoy them.

Ow btw both games are free to download and are freeware.
I think Naev even tried for Steam Greenlight.

there is a youtube for Net Games Laboratory highlighting this game seems to be in russian. looking at the textures and animations of the ships might require a very high end machine. they look pretty detailed and not bad at all. i am assuming there is much more to come in the future

not much for any of the tycoon series games though. i will check out what you suggested in the previous posts though. much the same here, where i am looking to play something for a while and not finish it in two hours like many of the console games i have seen.

getting late now, or early depending on where you are in the world arena. going to check out the game a little more when i get time. peace.
