NaissanceE

NaissanceE

Don't buy this, get Kairo instead!
NaissanceE has some neat visuals and locations and a few nice moments, but the rest is mostly really bad "game" design (not much of a game, really, there are very few puzzles). In the end, it's just a quite linear sightseeing tour/fps jumping orgy without much engaging gameplay, with no back story, through mostly meaningless architecture, with a lot of arbitrary annoyances you only learn about by trial and error (after you die a lot).

A much better, comparable game is Kairo (it's on Steam too).
Kairo is brilliantly designed, has great puzzles, additional collectibles and achievements, every single "room" is purpose designed, the entire world oozes atmosphere, and the back story you uncover while playing is amazing (do NOT google it until you have finished the game and want to go 100%).

Kairo does so much right that this game does wrong, so get Kairo instead.

I agree on everything except two points:
* I cannot remember anything close to a story in Kairo.
* I don't think Kairo is better than Naissance.

Kairo is good, but Naissance was overall the better ride for me. The one thing that really bugged me was the nonexistant saving functionality, other than that I had a great time. Kairo had surreal geometry, Naissance put surreal lighting (and sometimes surreal time-physics and logic) on top.

Since we are apparently listing puzzle games with comparable artstyle, I'd recommend Antichamber. I liked it better than both Kairo and Naissance, it features superior puzzles, some poetic and graphical beauty as well as clever use of non-euclidian geometry (which Naissance only briefly touches). It is not as visually stunning though.

I think the point that both of you missed was the point. The game doesn't seem to have a story or the need to challenge your brain with puzzles. It's more like an atmospheric game. And that's all it needs to be.

Antichamber was great. The puzzles difficult. No stroy to be seen or so minimal it was microscopic.

Antichamber was a good puzzle game.

I have not played Kairo but it seemed worth a play when i get around to it.

The Stanley Parable was about the story. The interactions between the character and the narrator and some other deep philisophical stuff if you play enough.

Dear Ester was a "tour" as you put it, with a decent story and nice sights to be seen.

Saying NaissancE was a bad puzzle game is like saying Dear Ester or The Stanley Parable were bad puzzle games. Of course, they aren't puzzle games. They are story bassed games, with no puzzles. NaissancE is a mood game with no story (or very little of it) and puzzles whose only function is to create a mood, not challenge your mind.

NaissancE is a good game, interesting at very least. But, if you prefer puzzle based games: play Antichamber. If you like story games: play Dear Ester or The Stanley Parable. Or if you like the whole package: play pOrtal.

They are all (NaissanceE, Kairo, Etc..) very good games. They are Different Flavours of the same Wonderful Dessert that is an Atmospheric Game.

Art Installation versus Walking Simulator versus Pachinko Machine versus Atmospheric World Simulator.

Maybe you're into pachinko machines.

One thing I can respect about Antichamber was you had to change your perspective or your idea of your perspective. That is a +2 for me. It also respected it's players in the clue department. Not to say everyone can't "get it" but if you did "get it" you had the "Ah ha!" moment.

The thing I can respect about NaissanceE is that where ever it shows you. That is where you're going for example, where the glowing slugs climb up and down walls or the 3 block light puzzle that I can respect out of a developer. There is a difference between handheld and giving the player a lead on even if the puzzles are simple, it's for the atmosphere.

I'll get back to about Kairo. I'm not like the engine just yet.

The best way to Enjoy Kairo, imho. Turn the sound up. Turn the lights off. Except perhaps 1 candle flickering behind you for atmosphere. A Drink of preference. Then imagine yourself falling asleep and waking up inside of Kairo. No equipment, No food, no water. no clue. You must get out, get back, figure out what is going on.
Well I use that starting lineup for a few choice games, it seemed to work well with Kairo..

I found the puzzles and game structure in Kairo to be too obtuse.

Kairo was alright, but what really put me out of the experience was the floaty movement. NaissanceE, on the other hand, feels nicely tight as well as just faster overall. Because of the movement in Kairo I always felt like I was larger on the sides than I actually was.

Sigh...Portal stole my virginity and has ruined me for every game since.
