Crashes? Check this post

While FoF is pretty stable in general, things don't tend to be perfect usually. If you suffer crashes, specially if those are frequent, check these:

Generic solutions

First of all, always verify game cache how to

Do the crash happens before reaching main menu?

>>> Try to launch FoF in windowed mode. In Steam library, right click over FoF, select properties, then look for "set launch options" and write there -windowed

Still crashes?

>>> restart Steam

Do the crash happens while playing?

>>> Disable "multicore support" inside the game: Options -> Video -> Advanced

Do the crash happens right after joining a server?

>>> Disable HTML MOTD ('message of the day') screen, also inside the game: Options -> Multiplayer -> Advanced

Other possible causes:
> Some anti-virus apps may crash FoF, try to add an exception for FoF if you use one (or just disable it temporarily to check if it's involved)
> Try to run the game with minimal graphic options, info here
> Update your drivers: graphics, sounds, motherboard

If nothing else work, could be due some hardware issue, but in that case other games also should crash .

How to report crashes

- Your operative system version (32 or 64 bit, etc)
- Your CPU / graphic card / sound manufacturer, and driver version if possible
- Some general description of the crash, can be reproduced? Explain how because random crashes are hard to fix.
- The server you were playing in, or if it was just a local game.
- Your Steam language

Upload your crash dumps - important!

Upload somewhere your crash dumps. They can be found in 'Steam/dumps' folder. Should be something like the most recent 'crash_hl2.exe_xxxx'

-Windows 7 64bit
- EVGA GTX 760, most recent drivers
- Happens literally every single game. I launch in, get way up in the leaderboards, and then it crashes for no reason whatsoever. No crash report or anything. Every single time.Its getting really annoying now since I can't play more than 2 or 3 minutes without the whole thing closing out.
-Any and all servers I've tried. Over 20 different ones by now

There are lot of things to check when a system crashes so much:

- temperatures
- voltages
- outdated drivers (graphics and sound mainly, but lan or chipset may also create issues)
- possible software that may conflict (I remember someone that reported an antivirus app crashing FoF, you should also check any other app that may be running at same time)

I don't mean a literal system crash sorry, just some application crashing. High temperatures or lower than normal voltages may crash the whole OS but not necessarily, the other causes I posted will crash the game without any effect on the OS. I just say this because I know that FoF is stable in most systems, so the only way I can help is pointing out possible issues that aren't related at all to FoF.

Windows 7, 64 bit
Using default Intel graphics chipset (because my nvidia card sucks ass)
I'll be in the middle of a game, and FoF will just crash randomly. I thought it was because of fof_depot but then it crashed on the boat one, and the snow one (sorry i dont know the map names). Like the game runs fine it just crashes randomly, it was some australian server, ping around 40-60

Thanks The Reaper, those crash dumps point to some kind of render error which could be due to multiple reasons. Try updating your graphic drivers, perhaps run the game in directx 8 mode (using -dxlevel 80 launch parameter)

For those with Mac snow leopard 10.6.8, upgrading to Mavericks seems to do the trick though i havn't test it for myself yet.

Well,I found the problem.If I change the video config,the game will crash after few moment.You can only play the game in default config.

I get a "hl2 has stopped working error". I start the game with Dxlevel 80 and verfiy data always, but it crashes back to desktop. Has someone a tip? This happens in a middle of a game.

I've started having this error recently and I can't work out what's causing it. The crash occurs randomly when I fire a weapon, mostly seems to be the smith carbine but it has happened when firing the ranger. It then freezes up for a random period of time and results in a hl2 has stopped working error.

The last thing I remember changing before I started getting these errors was I turned my graphics settings lower, such as shaders and shadows and textures. I have tried verifying cache and also just reinstalling. The game was really stable for me before then. I don't remember there being a FoF update timed to when this started, but they're might have been a steam update. I've tried disabling the overlay which hasn't stopped it.

I use Windows 7 64bit, Nvidia GTX 580 driver 337.88 which is the latest non beta driver. Soundcard is Creative Soundblaster X-Fi.

It happens on lots of servers, last one I was playing on was called Official EU #4 or something.

Thanks Zays, the crash dumps don't point to anything specific. Can't say much except take a look at whatever software you may have installed recently (or something that autoupdates as antivirus software), computer temperatures, voltages, etc.

Unfortunately nothing really changed that I know of except me reducing my graphics settings. I've been using the same Anti Virus since I discovered FoF. I'll try and put some things back to recommended, like shaders maybe, and see if anything changes. GPU is hot but definitely in safe temps by a large margin and CPU runs pretty low temps generally.

Edit - I think I figured out the cause but need to keep playing to be certain. Something else did change, I reinstalled my printer post reformat. It comes with a simple little printer monitoring utility, if I close this utility FoF seems to stop crashing. Makes me laugh but dosen't surprise me, printers are evil.
