also, it's very odd of Rebel_Y to put that post in the "bug reports" forum, considering low FPS isn't really a bug. So no, I never tried that config, but I did right now. And I gotta say, there was an extremely minor improvement. It definitely didn't help me run graphic intensive maps like Loothill
i said 8, not 9, 9 is what's on by default and 8 will increase performance significantly in comparison. the version of source engine that fof runs on does not support directx 7 so you will never be able to play fof using it. if you can't make do with 8, try using a low graphics config, you can find one in this thread:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/265630/discussions/2/34094415669901247/
beyond directx 8, low graphics config, and low graphics settings (INCLUDING resolution), i'm pretty sure there is nothing else you can do on the software end to get better performance in fof. however, even computers up to ten years old should be able to scrape by with at least 30fps in fof using these methods. i have a seven year old laptop that runs at 60 like this.
yes you are, change the aspect ratio setting from 16:9 or 16:10 to 4:3 and it will appear in the resolution list (640 480 though, not 600 400). if that's still not low enough resolution you can force it lower using the console, for example for 320x200
mat_setvideomode 320 200 1
or in launch options (right click fof in steam library > properties > set launch options) you can add custom res like this:
-w 320 -h 200
2.2GHz, 1 core, 1 thread
2x1GB DDR3
No GPU, Integrated Graphics
The rest really doesn't determine my FPS
But thanks for pointing out about that thread by Rebel_Y about increasing FPS. I still don't understand why he would put it in the bug reports forum (it really doesn't belong there)
