Where can I get the axe to go through the forest?

it's in the Crystal Caverns!

i recommend you search http://steamcommunity.com/app/265610/guides/ especially http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=232165199 which is a full walkthrough of the game with CTRL+F since there are many other similar items in the game that you will need at certain points and it has the locations for all of them (i.e the hammer, ladder, more...)

Dont you get the axe after you have cleared the forest.

Yeah, most key items are found after a boss battle. You will get the axe after you have defeated the Mighty Oak, the first boss found in the forest. The Crystal Caverns is the only main area that actually doesn't have a key item, but every other area does. (not including the graveyard, as that is an optional area(or a main area, depending if you agree with Matt or Nat)).

The crystal caverns have the candle.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the candle. Silly me.

It's probably because you rarely even use the candle, but nontheless thanks for bringing that up.
