The other reason is that a lot of people from DS expected another DS. This game is close, but not DS, some of mechanics and design desicions are different. It doesn't make game particularly better or worse, but some dislike it and vote against it.
So just Like DS, LoTF is tough, unforgiving, and if you play it wrong, or don't learn a few skills, or get your stats wrong, can be a tortuous slog.
I'll give you one example what in my personal experience is the difference between enjoying the game and hating it. The huge black tower knights, with the humungous shields, I didn't have anything that could break their shield block and every encounter was a total pain. But then I learnt how to defeat them. Took me maybe a hour dying to one near a checkpoint but eventually I got the timing right and could parry them with the starting daggers and a buckler shield. For me a game-changer.
One more point about why it's not getting sterling rave reviews - it did set itself up as a game like Dark Souls, so was always bound to come up short. It's level design, world doesn't match DS's beautiful design. And it's story is generic.
Saying that I do hope other developers copy the DS formula (please Bethesda, get your combat sorted) because LoTF is a great game, just don't expect it to surpass DS dizzy heights of brilliance, because maybe even Fromsoft won't ever manage to do that again.
My problems :
- gameplay : it is ok to have a hard , not too easy gameplay , nothing wrong with it.
However , what I have noticed : once an enemy starts an attack, you CANNOT evade it (other than putting your shield up) , even if the opponent start lounging forward and you get out of the way, somehow the sword bends 90 degrees ..
Same with the golems : they prepare to jump on you, then I start running, making a sharp turn, and the golems make again the same tun in mid-air, cathing you right into the face.
Next issue : I cannot make the enemies stumble , here is what happens in combat :
If I start an attack and am interrupted by my enemy : death follows as the character is usually so stunned that I cannot evade , shield or do anything else other that wondering if I've become the next punhing bag.
On the other hand, if I interrupt an enemies attack , it hits, but also the one from my enemy, which does not get interrupted. The outcome is survival with almost no health , and if facing more then one enemy : respawn ...
The spells :
Not sure how many time I have tried the prayer spell to get some breathing air, no matter what , my clone is always ignored and it does just stand there and glow in the dark, so much for having a disctraction.
Target locking :
what a sublime piece of ♥♥♥♥ this one is , granted, it helps blocking, but that's about it.
If you are ever locked on one target in a 1 vs many fight , you're dead as the damn camera always closes in on the lock and so does your movement. If I try to get away while in lock mode, the only retreat this game seems to know is attack (some say the best defense is to attack, but hey ... that is overrated in this context)
So yeah, I wish I had downloaded a copy from the net, would have saved me some money for a wonderful piece of ♥♥♥♥ which is so bad and frustrating that I cannot even find words to describe it.
The entire game lacks everything I would expect in terms of control and competition :
- enemies seem to know your every move
- enemies can easily absorb hits without getting interrupted , while you do
- if there is grass on the floor, you cannot just step over it, no you hang ...
- combat is actually good, if it were not for the lock mode and the unnatural abilities of your enemies, there is no balance from my point of view.
So yeah, that is why I hat this game and put it in a shelf labelled "most wonderful piece of sh*** ever developed.
This simply is not enjoyable as is has way too many bugs that utterly destroy and nice play time it might offer.
please note : personal opinion, if you like this game then that's ok for you.
