When you start and select a class, depending on gear and magic school you have a different amount of healing potions. Plate + cleric has the least amount (2 I believe) and rogue has the most (6 or so).
When you interact with a healing crystal/checkpoint you can only restore as many potions as there are red crystals floating around the checkpoint. When you restore potions you can see the small crystal shards stop glowing and fall to the ground.
What's dieing have to do with it ?
If I restore all the healing pots I have (3) that's three. I regularly get 6,7,8 healing pots upon death.
Let me go into more detail:
Lets say I start with 3, I die after using all three. When I am resurrected at crystal I always get more- ie: 5 or more. Then sometimes when I resurrect I get up to 8!?!?
If you use a checkpoint the first chrystal will replenish your health and the remaining 3 chrystals will be added to your potions. If you have full health it should add up to 4 potions.
Oh I see. So those times I end up with 7-8 potions I must have not used at least 3-4 when I died.
- Initialy you have a small number of health potions, depending on the selected class.
- Whenever you pick up an item called "empty bottle" you get +1 to max health potions. You will only notice this after using a checkpoint with enough red shards ("crystals") left to fill up the new "empty bottle".
- If you decide to give a potion to an NPC, e.g. the Monk after cutting his arm, you will not only loose the potions content, but also the bottle, so -1 to max health potions.
- When you die, all your potion bottles will be refilled no matter how many potions you had left when you used the last checkpoint (afaik).
- When using a checkpoint you'll get your life refilled first which consumes one of the floating shards of the checkpoint - if there is health to refill. The remaining shards afterwards will fill up your empty potion bottles one by one or remain floating there if max health potions is reached.
- The checkpoint regenerates its shards over time and the shards will lift of the ground and float again. This happens one by one, so you really need to wait a while for all four shards to lift off the ground again.
