Wtf is wrong with this game?!
I have so many "WHY!?" for this game.
Why all weapons after short swords are sooooooo **** slow?!
Why shield enemies are everywhere?!
Why some fast enemies are immune to criticals?!
Why enemies who can one-shot me, standing in my way?!
Why dogs are taking 2+ full combos?!
Why magic is SOoooo slow?!
Why it takes so long to get up?!
Disptite that, i you learn arts of cheesing it's doable.
But really, i want to ask people who did all this bs - were you all high?

I'm playing as a Cleric (16 Vit, 30 Fth, 20 End) and using Clawfinger. My weapons were Defiance -> Pain -> Qamar -> Clawfinger. Right now I'm in the Catacombs, after my first trip to the Rhogar realm.

Shield enemies can be a pain, since circling around the back and finding the sweet spot for a crit requires a bit much. Small shield enemies I found, so far, will attack back after 1 hit. This means you can either kick (L2 if 2H a weapon or toward+R1 if 1H) and then attack or just attack twice. If you attack twice, the first hit will either break their guard to allow a follow-up or they will block and begin to attack which means your next attack will go through. Large shield enemies I found, so far, attack back after 2-3 hits. Following the same process nets the same result.

I noticed that I had a real problem until I found Qamar, given that Defiance is a Str-based weapon. Pain was my first Fth-based weapon and made things a bit easier. It puts points in Poison damage, which makes Infested take 2x as long to kill at that point and the regular enemies much, much easier.

Lords of the Fallen does a bunch of things right and some little, more obvious things, really wrong. I can completely understand being turned off to the game if you've played the Souls series and other Souls-likes. Still, if you can find a way to accept the way the game wants you to play, it may turn out to be the easiest Souls-like to play. :spiralheart_:

I defeated the Lost Brothers and am near the end of the game (20 Vit, 35 Fth, 25 End; Stare/Lightning), with just the DLC boss and final boss to take down. I wanted to piggyback on this in order to potentially help out other players.

Pushing Vitality as a Cleric was not really needed, since I was able to use Shelter as reliable HoT and regular health potions filled up a meaningful part of my health bar. In fact, I rarely used health potions because I had access to Shelter.* Enemies are also not consistently aggressive, in that they give me plenty of opportunities to disengage and move behind geometry like pillars and staircases to heal.

The most important aspects were leveling my damage and magic usage through Faith and increasing my equipment load and stamina through Endurance. I was consistently able to wear a Heavy chest piece with Heavy Boots, Medium/Heavy gloves, and Light helmet about one-third of the way through the game. This allowed me to have the stamina to get meaningful hits on shield-wielding enemies, be staggered less when hit and attack through some enemy attacks due to better poise, and reliably heal when I disengaged due to increased magic capacity.

I'm reminded a lot of the PS3 game Splatterhouse, in that the game does a good job needlessly frustrating players early on and this make the game seem genuinely bad. But things will click very early on, too. Once the player accepts how the game wants to be played (cf. Souls players skilled in the ancient art of the Roly Poly taking time to 'get' how to play Sekiro), the whole thing opens up and becomes an enjoyable experience with some rough edges.

Addendum
Gotta say, it's completely backwards that Adyr says that Humanity was completely outmatched until Harken came along and then, suddenly, human enemies are damage sponges that hit incredibly hard. It doesn't make any sense from a narrative perspective, especially given that they don't have any special armour or weapons -they're using the same stuff we saw when we had access to the Citadel.

Next to that, the Keeper and Judge felt really off next to all of the other bosses in the game.

The Keeper had a 1-hit mechanic that requires the player to sprint behind a wall, however the player has just enough time to do so and has to fight the sluggish controls. Trading blows and healing with Shelter was easy enough, but the 1-hit mechanic caused a few deaths by being just a hair past the wall's protection when running behind it.

The Judge effectively has two 1-hit mechanics that I encountered, the fire trails (given just how hard they hit and how they function) and a fire slam. The real problem is the way the fire trail functions and especially relative to the camera. Since the fire always spawns behind you and, from the Judge is too far away to see a tell, the player has too little room for error when timing their dodge: something the player must do 3 times in a row.

The lone DLC fight and the final boss make what would be an otherwise solid B-tier game that I'd want to play again (NG or NG+) into a game I enjoyed for the most part and I'm glad I played, but wouldn't really want to play again.**

---
*Mileage may vary for other magic classes. I recall my PS4 playthrough a few years back with a Warrior being different during the early-game.

**I played again on the PC because I didn't really beat the game on the PS4. After struggling with the Judge several years ago, I encountered two situations. The first was where his model was stretched out from the balcony to the arena, or the arena to the balcony, it's hard to remember what direction it went at this point. The second was where Prayer seemed to cause the boss to be unresponsive, so I just downed them quickly. It always felt unfinished and left a bad taste in my mouth.

At least now I can say that I genuinely beat the game.

You can bait small shield enemies with your illusions and one shot them from behind.
The bigger ones are a bit more tricky, wait until they charge and you will be able to interrupt their attack with a heavy attack before it hits.
This isn't dark souls mate. You need to think and time your swings in this game. Once you respect this fact you'd be surprised at how easy combat is.

I love farming games (Not role-playing, gross-- but they call it that anyways) to upgrade your character and make them stronger, and I don't like slow progress so I guess I'll be taking my money somewhere else.

As someone about to finish Sekiro (coming straight from BB and Lies of P) I feel personally attacked! Once you get it, you got it. Getting there was tough. Now I'm eyeing Lords as my next game.

So, how fast or slow you attack, move, recover, etc., is dependent on your armor class, whether you're dual-wielding, shield/weapon, or 2H mode, and the weapon you're using.
It's really in-depth and unfortunately just doesn't explain anything to the players.

source: me, with 800+ hours in the game.

use the Ram spell from the orange skill tree and it knocks them on their ass then follow up with a running 2 handed attack to finish them off.

2 things would improve the game drastically:

1) Option to toggle off screen wobble.
2) overhaul attack animaitons, because most weapons do not have an acceleration towards the end of the animation, which is needed for a weapon to look and feel like you actually swing it. The animations have the same speed from start to finish, which is what makes it feel so slow and clunky

Given that the game seems to be unmodable or nobody cares about modding it, and deck13 not being a part of CI games, I doubt there will ever be a fix to what could be a really decent souls like game, even in 2023, because the graphics are still great and there are some unique and fun concepts in the game (having your shild on the back actually blocking attacks and projectiles, is one example).

I would even think adding some multiplayer (even if just p2p pvp in fixed locations) and some fixes would have revived the game as a great wait till the coming reboot. Invest 50k to potentially gain a few k sales, which would turn a profit for a decade old game.
