Similar games?
On paper I should love this game, but it is simply held back by lack of diversity in the mobs and bosses. The animations are all samish and there is just a general lack of atmosphere about the game. I need something similar but with better content. I already have Dark souls 1 but have not managed to finish it yet. Can anyone else recommend something similar to this?

Besides The Surge(made by the same dev team)? I'm afraid nothing.

Dark Souls will be reminiscent but so much will be different.

Maybe try playing Diablo 3 with a melee char? Crusader with 2H Swords should be familiar enough(outside of control scheme)

I did read about the surge but I'm not looking for ant sci fi themed games I'm afraid. I want dark fantasy/horror. I'm going to get Arx Fatalis when I get home from work tonight, and i also had a look at the Kingsfield series but those are PlayStation titles unfortunately.

I'm actually surprised by the lack of titles in this sub genre. I would have thought it would be a bit more popular

Dark souls 2 and 3, Salt & Sancturary?
If you like to try something diffferent try Caves of Qud, or Tales of Maj'Eyal. Last mentioned is free on the official site. This comes closer to LotF than Diablo 3, but it looks like poo.
I can assure you, it's good stuff, try it!

Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah, Vermintide(it's more of a slasher, but worth a look)...

And, of course, Dark Souls. But, as I said, they could be disappointing in number of ways after playing Lords. I recommend trying them all(legally or otherwise) because each one of them feels and plays different. 1 is the closest to Lords. 2 is the most atmospheric imo and has the best multiplayer. 3 is like Dark Souls + Bloodborne, much faster than previous entries.

Also, maybe Gothic games?

Hi, everyone can have their own opinions and taste, I'm forming my own opinion about Lords of the Fallen as we speak. I have played the Dark Souls Triology and have spent many hours in those games. DS 1 and DS3 are more similar than DS2, for many reasons and in many ways. It seems there is a trade off alot of times like storyline for gameplay or graphics or gameplay. For me just gameplay or killing isn't enough, I need something to trigger my imagination with gameplay up to a certain level,at least.:praisesun:

I like all Dark Souls games, it's just that the creator, Miyazaki after finishing up DS1 started working on another project, I believe it was Bloodborne, team B took over for DS 2, then he came back and had more direct contact with DS 3. Think of it like this, there is DS 2 then a remake called DS 2 Scholar of the First Sin. :praisesun:

Demon souls and to some extent Dark souls 1. If we are talking older games though, I would go with Rune, Severance: blade of darkness, Die by the sword, Enclave, maybe even Soul reaver and couple of other games which names escapes my memory right now.

I've liked Dragon's dogma, although it can be even more weeabo-ish than Dark souls sometimes, but at least you will spend more time upright than in dodgerolls and the melee combat is great.

Arx fatalis, Dark Messiah, Clive Barker's Undying, Realms of the haunting, gothic/risen/drakensang etc I feel all got some similarities, but we are getting into much broader genre then. From 2d games, salt n sanctuary mentioned is pretty darn good game too.

Edit: Forgot to mention upcomming new games which might or might not deliver in this regard. Most notable are Elex and esp.for me Deliverance kingdom come (for the more realistic melee combat)
