How does rarity RNG work?
I'm trying to figure out how to get the best rarity of weapons/armor on my first run through since it apparently there's no way to improve it once you have it but I don't know how the rarity is decided. Is the luck stat involved? XP modifier? Is the rarity set when you first start the zone or is it calculated when you open the chest? If you happen to know these things with certainty, I'd appreciate the help. Not looking for guesses, though.

The way the game saves can also be used to get rare weapons from the boss fights if u messed up.

Also to get correct runes!

I didn't mention this because it's really common sense.
As Gorwe states below, about runes this is also common sense. Whatever is done between each save can always be restarted if you mess up.

****Spolier Alert****
However, here's something that ISN'T common sense and what very few people actually know about reloading from last save; as soon as you die, press pause, quit the game and reload from last save point. This way, you won't lose your experience and experience multiplier.

Ah, lol.

All of that is great guys but none of you have said a single thing about how to increase my chances of getting high rarity (purple, rather than white) weapons/armor from chests, which was the question :p

I really don't know why I bother really, replying on here.
How about you reread what I've written?
Maybe the "All chests contain a certain weapon for that location" part?
Chest pickups are therefore fixed. The monk staff, for example, will always be in a chest, down the stairs, in between the two doors that contain infested in, after defeating the First Warden. It's somewhat different though for some armours (or maybe just one), depending on your build. Look up LotF wiki. However that said, if you open every chest in the game, you will get all the armours available.

Purple weapons will either be in chests or dropped from bosses by default. You CAN have bosses drop the gold version, but only if you defeat the boss, a certain way to enable it. All bosses have a different way to get them to drop their gold version.

In this respect, it's no different than Dark Souls. Iaito will always be on a roof in Blight Town and Mail Breaker will always be in a house from which a Hollow Thief comes.

Really, I must say that I prefer this way to complete rng. Sure, you can plan your playthrough, but it's more satisfying ultimately.

I did read what you wrote. If you returned the same courtesy you might understand that you still did not answer the question. I know that certain chests contain certain weapons or armors because I did read the wiki. What the wiki did not tell me is what determines the rarity type of the weapon/armor (white, purple, yellow). It seems that yellow rarity is only for select weapons and not subject to RNG but I've reloaded saves to loot the same chest before and had armor and weapons change between white and purple so there's some kind of RNG system at work there. I want to know what effects it.

I don't think anyone knows the answer m8 or is all that botherd.

Now you have said though i might look myself.
If you could still get better rarities in NG+ and NG++ I wouldn't bother with it but since the first one is all you get... I'd prefer it be the best quality. I know it doesn't really matter though, you don't need good gear to beat this game. I find it baffling that they don't allow you to improve gear in replays though, I would have thought that would be the main idea.

All chests contain the piece of armour/weapon you're supposed to get, regardless whether being white or purple. It doesn't matter how many times you reload, you'll always get that specific piece colour.
Rule of thumb dictates that purple armour has a socket/s. For some reason this isn't always the case (and I don't know why) such as with Demon Assassin armour, which is all purple but for some reason the wrist armour has no socket. It's just the way it is.

It's a shame you can't upgrade your weapons. I LOVE how Lethal Secret(s) look like. But I CAN'T use them(wtf). This is one area where Dark Souls just annihilates Lords. You want to use something? Deal-use it via upgrading. A lovely system.

(meta micron optimal builds nonwithstanding, ofc - who cares about those, I am a Vorthos after all :D )

That's true about DS. I do like how you can change the scaling on the weapon to either strength, agility, bleed, poison, magic, etc etc. However, that said, I do like the specialisation in LotF. It's only a short game so you can always start again with another build or simply respec in NG+ as you will after all pick up about 66 attribute shards to level up your character and considering there are only 10 levels of attributes available in total experience points, the game after that, respecing to another build and then going down that road, won't penalize you at all. In DS, however, there's more of a penalty in that although you can respec numerous times, you can't always change your weapon to your scaling build, if you're out of the necessary gems.

Yes, but you can't use Lethal Secret and the like, can you? In Dark Souls you could(just upgrade them heh).

Agreed about the rest.
