traversal in SM2 is ♥♥♥♥.
I can honestly say after 16+ hours given in this game that swinging mechanic is really fu*ked up compared to spider-man 1. While it's OK when you are high above ground as soon as you hit near streets level it's almost impossible to swing. Looks like every web hook is extending webs too much to always hit the ground. too much extension. this was not the case in SM1. I thought I would hate flying in this game from the first time I heard about it, but that is me thinking they wouldn't change swinging much..now...i don't mind flying as much, but they really really should fix the swinging.

does anyone else think so?

Are you drunk? The traversal in SM2 is mf top notch. It blows the first one out of the water. The addition of wings and skills to directly change how you traverse the city is just amazing.

No, not at all.
After completely 100%-ing the game and getting every achievement except NG+, I think I hit the ground on a low swing maybe twice.
Idk wtf you're doing wrong but it's 100% a you thing.

Also there's a steering assist setting you can adjust for swinging. I didn't need to adjust it but maybe you should because idk what else to tell ya...

U tripping, if there is one thing that got greatly improved in this game from the first, its the traversal and swinging. the web extends or has that effect because its actually realistic, webs stretch and that is what makes the swinging in this feel fast and weighty. not to mention fully upgraded traversal u go at mach speeds
I'm not saying it didn't get better when you are high up. I do feel though they invested so much into making the wings work that they overlook some things compared to SM1. It's not a me thing I tried to make it work number of times. I am not hitting ground if I don't want to but I have to stay higher up. The way Spidey moved when near ground level in SM1 and the point to where web sticks is way different than in SM2. See in SM1 web could hook in front and was tight straight away, in SM2, it hooks always behind, and it's always a stretch till tight, resulting in half circular down motion, which makes you hit the ground. You can't do monkey bar anymore, it's just.. it's good up high, but they ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up near ground swinging. I have video demonstrating on SM1 near ground swinging and in SM2 it's impossible. But here, try it and post a video I would really love to see where do I do wrong.

You can physically not hit the ground while swinging unless you have assists disabled. That's kind of the whole point of the swing assist.
bro you dont know what you talking about

yeap I have looked at it and it was on 0. So silly me thinking I don't need since I was doing wonders in SM1. I cranked that ♥♥♥♥ up to max and now It's so seamless. Turning of swing assist completely makes it impossible to do anything. It's not adding physics but it's completely making up stuff just to make your gameplay miserable.

Anyway..case closed.

The reason you had no issues in SM1, is that the game has swing assist at what is now 10 in SM2 by default. It simply wasn't a setting at all. Full Assist was always on.

You're also wrong, though. Swing Assist at 0 is simply fully physics driven.

They made it more realistic, the first game had an invisible floor that would float you up when you got too close too it. So if you try to swing like the first game, your body will hit the floor. (haha)
When I started the game I immediately turned down the swing assist to 0. It was tough learning how to swing without any assist, but eventually I got the hang of it and swinging feels really fun and very involved. I know I'm doing the swinging, not the game holding my hand.

interesting take. I did try with swing assist to 0 and I can honestly say it didn't feel like realistic. I mean let's face it it's spiderman, there goes your realism straight away...but if you ignore the fact, i'd say realistic is somewhere on 3-4 assist. On 0 it's just ridiculous. Web is always hitting behind never on building in front, and no matter how high or low you are web is always flabby and you are going motion down to tight it so even if you are near ground you start circling down..so that's not realistic that is plain "we don't care, here is swinging without any care whatsoever. For me I just don't mind assist. I didn't think it would impact swinging this much. I'd rather have fun playing than torturing myself. Still - I stand by my statement. If you put Assist on 0, you would NOT be able to do any great stuff you could in SM1. No matter how hard you study or learn or how much time you spend mastering it, it's impossible to NOT HIT the ground if you want to swing just barely above. I couldn't even do monkey bar swinging without cranking up assist at least a bit.

I'm a swing assist 0 enjoyer, it makes me have to think more and the swinging feels more engaging knowing it's harder for me to go right where I'm going or that I can actually hit a building in a loop or lose all of my momentum.

Well you can't both have your cake and eat it. Swing assist 0 gives you more control, not complete control but at least more than the first game. But that also means the cool moves the game would do for you, don't happen anymore. But honestly I don't miss it. I'm too busy moving really fast from point A to B, focusing on avoiding hitting buildings and the ground, cause I know I don't have any guard rails. It feels more of an effort and just swinging really fast and keeping up the momentum feel like an effort, and in a good way. It's still a very hand-holdy system tho. Nothing like the original Spider-Man 2 from 2004. That game gave you complete control.

hitting building was never a problem but I am puzzled on how do you control where does the web stick when you have swing assist at 0? i feel that it has failed me. as I've said before, it's not about control, it's that it was implemented in such way to make it impossible to do anything cool, unless you are swinging mid air. Honestly I couldn't enjoy the game at all having it with 0 assist.

I'd like to see an example of really fast traversal or swinging near ground or anything really just to compare. Not that I'm calling you on it or anything like that, I just would like to see someone swinging good with 0 assist and doing something that I can say benefits for having it completely off. Even that "control" you are all talking about. I didn't feel that I do have control whatsoever, I felt game not only took my control away but created artificial problems that weren't suppose to be there, just for the sake of torturing players.

I am not saying it should be up to the max either, but I was so pissed that I had this at 0 thinking traversal in this game is ♥♥♥♥, just for trusting they did this option justice. now i'm taking my revenge. i won't turn it down from 10 just because of the principal, even if I think sweet spot is somewhere around 3-4. They should have explained this in more details and maybe give it a more polishing.

@TrueGamer007, oh yeah I remember SM2 from 2004 for PS2. (that the one that had left and right triggers controlling each hand individually)? that was really good game - but my problem with SM2 was I though PC version is the same, because i didn't own PS2 back then. oooooh the pain and disappointment when you try PC version. Though I remember ultimate spiderman also being a good game.

I have fun swinging with 0 because I don't stay near the ground, and when I am, it feels rewarding to just graze over the ground and not get stuck, and I get punished for swinging too close to the ground. That's engaging for me. It's less about control for me, it's more about having punishments/feeling rewarded for doing well.
I wish I shared your need for torturing yourself. Actually..scratch that, I don't :) But hey, no judgement here. I'm really happy that you find satisfaction in the way you play this. After all, this is why the game was made.

I'm also glad that I found the solution to my initial claim. Ever since you guys pointed me in this direction, I actually started enjoying the game much more. Cheers!
