I had that problem too. Loading the checkpoint fixed it. The checkpoint is right at that point so you don't have to repeat anything.

When I initially activated the checkpoint I had a white tube showing the trail instead of the animated trail.
For me however, restarting the checkpoint made everything the trail disappear entirely.
Prior to the crash restarting the game entirely once fixed the problem, but since the re-installation no joy.
I completed the mission by remembering where Grandad was and finding him. Going to try again after disabling the NVidia overlay.
I am using an RTX 3080 GPU on an i9900 with 64GB of RAM with the game installed on a 500GB NVME PCIE drive being used for DirectStorage
