*SPOILERS(kind of)* Ancient Floaters Theory
So, on the wiki it says that the floaters on the floating island are thousands of years old, and that gave me an idea. If you go to the bottom of the floating island, you can see small bits of rock falling off. While this is purely visual, it implies a few things.
1. The island is shrinking, and has been for the time it has been floating.
2. The island used to be bigger.
Now, seeing as this island has been here for thousands of years, for all we know, there could have been more floaters and more rock, but the chunks may have broken off and either floated out of the crater, or gotten too small to provide enough food for the floater, killing it.
Since the island is over the Grand Reef, and the grand reef goes kinda deep, I thought that maybe the grand reef used to be shallower and/or smaller. This means that the Grand Reef as we know it in the game COULD have been shallower in the past, and floaters hollowed it out.

Let me know what you think of this theory, I would love to hear any other theories!

i think there couldve been more precursor tech there but it just got berried under the rocks seeing as why is there only a portal on the island? couldnt there have been more? and yes there probobly couldve, they probobly made a guard bot charging station or some other mechanical thing...just imagine that tho, you just vibin in a prawn and suddenly an arm grabs you by the leg and rips you out of the prawn, then another one cracks your skull open... in survival that is, in creative you might as well be t posing over it

True, there could have been maybe some living quarters? Who knows.

possibly just possibly this is a dumb theory but according to this theory when the grad reef was shallower it might have been a totally different biome and then once the floaters lifted it up it changed into the biome it is now because of 1. the depth of the new terrain or 2. the grand reef was a giant cave underneath the shallow area that was uncovered
Using the Amazon rain forest as a comparison I can see the floating island regenerating itself via plant produced materials, atmospheric dust, decaying animal carcasses (the flyers & crabs). I agree that the rate of material dropping off the bottom of the island would likely erase the island in a pretty short time but this is a game that needs visually interesting effects.

Interesting thought, what if you are exactly right...and that's the map? As in the entire game map inside the dead zone being a massive chunk of floating rock held up by centuries old floaters we just can't go down and see. Could explain to some degree why every single side of the area just immediately drops off into nothing, if the next nearest land is tens of thousands of meters down (though wouldn't exactly explain the perfect cut, buuuut...not exactly easy to logic away what is purely a design choice)
