a really interesting thing is that they
1.Make you hear things
2.Hacks your PDA in its description

and one that not many people know about

3.Is Near the exit of the portals from the primary containment facility (except for the one in the sea emproror's aquarium)

it lives in all the same biomes as the warp gates (and also the kelp forest to draw away any suspision)

so let me know about your theories about this creature. mine isthat the precursers made it to capture small creatures for study but they ended up eating every fish they cought and were released into the wild, and they still stay near the portals waiting for their former masters to return. Some gave up and decided to go to the kelp forest to try and find a new life.

My headcanon is that its actually just disrupting your brain's energy signals and therefore you hear the voice that is most familiar to you: your PDA. If other's had survived and you met them maybe you would hear the same dialogue in their voices.
This makes sense to me since these voices would be familiar and trustworthy to you.
This may also be why it alters your PDA's data bank entry on the mesmer.

The data bank entry says about the mesmer:
"Tiny lenses on the surface can be tilted independently to create mesmerizing patterns which flood the victim's brain with enticing messages, interpreted in whatever form is most convincing by the target."

In my headcannon, the [ERROR463] part means the scanner or pda was fooled by the Mesmer, at least for a moment.

The caves themselves have no aggressive creatures. Just make sure you have a quick way to get oxygen and a pathfinder.

i personally think they wer created to held creatures on place that had khaara whie the wapers came to *despose* of them

I think that maybe they were genetically engineered like the warpers, except the project was deemed a failure by the precursors and in an attempt to dispose of them, they were accidently released. its not my final idea though and has a lot of holes in it.

it cant be residual because the pda says the same thing if you scan the mesmer without it trying to hypnotize you (i managed to scan one while trying to bait it into hypnotizeing me and it never did which made me sad)
