Mesmers are probably the most interesting creatures
(contains spoilers for Subnautica v1.0)

a really interesting thing is that they
1.Make you hear things
2.Hacks your PDA in its description

and one that not many people know about

3.Is Near the exit of the portals from the primary containment facility (except for the one in the sea emproror's aquarium)

it lives in all the same biomes as the warp gates (and also the kelp forest to draw away any suspision)

so let me know about your theories about this creature. mine isthat the precursers made it to capture small creatures for study but they ended up eating every fish they cought and were released into the wild, and they still stay near the portals waiting for their former masters to return. Some gave up and decided to go to the kelp forest to try and find a new life.

tell me your theories in the comments

They're pretty cool, my favorite. Thus my profile picture.

Didn't meet a Mesmer until the very end and that's only because I thought it was a Sea Crown plant and tried to pick it up xD

I kited one and listened to the full auditory hallucinations it gives you. They are definitely cool fish.

Must...hug...mesmer

I don't think it hacks your PDA. That's just residual hypnosis.

They definitely hack your pda. Its not a residual thing

I agree with the residual hypothesis. If psychic creatures could control computers, the Sea Empress would have hacked the alien security systems long ago.

It’s not hacking your PDA it’s making you think you’re hearing your PDA because that’s the best way to convince you to get closer. It’s tricking your brain.

On that note though I love them so much but I only started liking them after finds by eggs and hatching a few. Then after you release them they don’t treat you like a threat anymore. Unless you run into them they don’t attack you. They’ll stay where you release them just like cuddlefish do, they’ll chase away predators like stalkers and will hunt small fish and leave them to be collected for food.

They are the cats of subnautica.

When you get hit by it's Hypnosis your PDA will say
"It is your primary directive to swim closer to that beautiful creature... Swim closer... Swim closer now... It looks so friendly... Do not resist... Don't struggle... Go closer"
But if you check the voice log, there is nothing. The scan tells you this
1. Outer Wings:
The mesmer swims using a number of wings which can be angled up and forwards on approaching its prey. Tiny lenses on the surface can be tilted independently to create mesmerizing patterns which flood the victim's brain with enticing messages, interpreted in whatever form is most convincing by the target.
The mesmer will try to use the most convincing thing possible, and what better than the survival PDA you desprately depend on.
2. Outer Shell
The mesmer can open the jawlike recess in its protective outer shell in order to [ERROR463] share its beauty... Do not resist...
It's just trying to appeal to you.
It can't hack.
Otherwise the Sea Emperor would have her kids out in a flash.

I was disappointed that getting one of your own doesn't have unique dialog.

My Hypothisis how they evolved is by starting by a small, flat like creature that had the ablity to attract prey by scent or its beauty. then it evolved and started folding and had the ablity to do mind tricks.

It's not corrupting your PDA. It's making you think that your PDA is telling you what to do.
