I don't think the fire was burning the entire 3 hours. It's probably more like he was in and out of consciousness until the fire broke out and kicked his adrenaline into gear.
My guess is that Warpers are not in the safe shallows for game-mechanic-reasons rather than lore-reasons.
For new players that still struggle to get to know the game and fabricate their very basic equipment it would be simply unfair to have Warpers roam in the first areas players can visit.
If the game would start out throwing almost everything at players it would have nothing left to discover as well.
Besides, only few lifepods are not completely destroyed. Much of the crew was probably dead after the QEP hit the Aurora, before the pods were even launched.
maybe they were rescued by warpers before they could be infected, and the player is the unlucky one who was unconscious so couldn't be detected and saved before he was infected. Some sort of automated system has to be managing the quarantine and research.
But his lifepod was not too far away from the radiation-area either. Also, his pod ended up in an area full of dangerous creatures.
So was the captain between crash and detonation.
But what significance does it have?
The game pretty much confirms you are the only survivor when the Sunbeam arrives.
