I know this is a rather late reply, but I think the game crashes because when you approach the Island, a lot of new textures try to load to quickly causing the crash. This problem is further compounded when you approach the Island in a Seamoth or any fast traveling vehicle.
I found that by temporarily lowering my water quality and resolution level, it helps. A second thing to also do is to stare up at he sky while moving forward and not down at the sea floor (this prevents all that texture on the seafloor from having to load and possibly crashing your game). Finally, a third thing to do is move forward slowly, as in move forward.....stop......move forward again.....stop again....etc lol (this allows the game to load all textures in small amounts and not all at once which can crash your game). Hope this helps, good luck!
