If you hold the power button for 5 seconds it does a hard shutdown, this means a full power-off, it is designed this way to save you from some of these very things.
If it's locking up the keyboard and only the keyboard then you should probably turn off any keyboard related software overlays/keyhooks. It'll be in your system tray near the clock. They usually control all those media keys that most people don't use on regular computers but use on laptops all the time...
Anyway, it is most definitely a software conflict, and that means that something else has taken priority over your keyboard and has crashed into an infinite loop (runaway process), and as there are only a handful of default software packages that do this on a laptop, just turn off the media keys software helper app for a while and test it out. And to make sure it's only a piece of default software, turn off any gaming overlays (streaming, FPS, communications) as well.
I contacted support for my computer manufacturer and they told me to update my BIOS, which I didn't even realize was out of date. I'll also take your advice and turn off media keys and other overlays, though I can't find it on the system tray (I'll figure it out). Thanks for the help.
