So the ones in place are just unlocked with the player's progression. The idea was that if there is a need for an achievement, you don't need to be a hardcore player to unlock it.

Correct

Some people tend to complain about achievements like that, so I think many developers opt to not include such.

Seems to me that's the kind of thing that really should count as an achievement. Meanwhile there is an achievement for diving into the water.

Some are even too scared to do that. Imagine asking them to complete the game on hardcore.

Well, yeah. Imo an achievement should be something you'd have to be really dedicated to the game to actually do. It shouldn't be a participation prize or a reward for looking something up on the internet. Back in the day doing something achievement-like would unlock new content in the game, a new outfit for Samus Aran or something like that. Nowadays it's a marketing gimmick, bake in an achievement ding every so often to keep the kids motivated. If you aren't already motivated to keep playing then it's probably not a game you should play anyway. I turn off the Steam Overlay in all my games just stop getting the notifications, distracting and immersion breaking annoyances imo.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but you went and got me started.

It is quite common for a portion of game developers / distributors Achievements to be progress awards, sort of blue ribbons for "stick-to-itiveness". After all, there are huge proportions of game owners / fans who never finish longer games.

Note that by Steam statistics, (to date) about 21%+ of Subnautica holders never even get the Achievement for entering the water.

There are a lot of games what I've bought which I have every intention of playing but so far I've only tried them for a few minutes to make sure they run on my machine. Most of the games I start I do finish, but the list of unplayed games just seems to get longer and longer. I'm pretty sure I;m not alone in this.

Anyway, this reminds of a review of Wurm Online I saw once. Only 10% ever even complete the tutorial and it's got Steam achievements up the wazoo.

Like "Complete subnautica on Hardmore without building or collecting anything." ones?

(Yeah, please, don't)

Can't be done, VR. :steamhappy:

No air source at depth without at least some collecting/building.

(And, Yeah, I know you were being facetious. :steamhappy: )

(I have seen / heard of some folks doing it with just a Seaglide, a knife, one tube, and some ultra tanks, though.)

That one air bubble plant could make it become a possible way, yet, they didn't plant it too deep. It could've been a nice challenge, but thank god they didn't make it into the game xD

You're talking about brain coral. (It doesn't look much like a brain though. Fun fact -- there is brain coral irl and that actually does look like a brain.) Theoretically you could plant it in growbeds every so often and make your way to the end of the game using it to breath. Maybe in the same planter put gel sacks in case you get hungry or thirsty. I'm thinking it would be a real pain but at least you wouldn't have to worry about lava larva. (Would the plural be lava larvas or lava larvae?)

Darn, RD. I forgot about Brain Coral.

In fact, I may have even read one time about a guy who explored as far as the LR only using Brain Coral. But that person at least built growbeds, I think, so there would have to be some collecting/building.

Not to mention that you would be hard pressed to just FIND enough Brain Coral for the effort if you didn't farm some, and you HAVE to have a growbed for that.

Likewise, you can MOVE BC, but you have to at least build a Prop Cannon for that. And to get the blueprint for the Prop Cannon, you must first build a hand Scanner. Etc, etc.

Nope. Nope. Still of the opinion that a run through without SOME collecting/building is impossible.

I probably said it in wrong terms. I didn't mean that a PLAYER should plant brain corals on his way to the endgame. Devs could "plant" them in every area leading to the story objectives, so reaching them without any equipment was possible. Just to get the achievement.Thank god they didn't

Thanks for the background, Ignis!

How early were you with UWE? Before the SN project?
