From what i have read about base building, the sections will have to be sunk and then attached to the seabed. I am assuming that until they come up with how to do this they have made the observatory sink. For the time being look around for Floaters (pink blobby objects that you should of seen attached to boulders), collect them and the assign to a quick slot and right click to attach. One will float it but if its on the end one side dips.

Well hope they fix it to be more of then just a glass sinking box in future.

It was only about 100m. The lifepod spawned right above the hole blasting lava and steam. Once I got to the bottom, it was a bit anti-climatic as I could dig out the sand from the "lava". haha

The observatory is just a quick, very basic first pass prototype at a base building mechanic. You can expect that the base building system will become much more robust as we work on it further.

I just built 2 and let them sink to around 106m, I also placed a beacon in each. Quite happily explored the sea bed and some deep holes. Unfortunately when I went back to find them again they had no-clipped through the seabed, I can still see the beacons though. I love the observatories.
