Really, the fact the void is filled with the biggest monsters is more to try and distract from the fact the void is a reminder of how small the game world is.
Because honestly, the fact there is absolutly nothing out there by itself is enough of a deterrent by itself.
In fact, being killed by a monster out there is CONVENIENT in two out of three game modes. Because that means you don't have to make the long drive back. So something that could "Swallow a sea dragon whole" would ironically make things more casual.
That, and making a brand new super monster just for the void "Biome" is effort and bugs to prevent that the Dev team just won't want to bother with.
Considering they still can't prevent gaspods and sharks of assorted varieties break their leashing and spawncamp the lifepod (a known bug and not working as intended, as admitted by the devs)? I can only imagine how well it would turn out if they added some larger than life super monster. And a bug like that would attract far more bad PR.
The last post in this thread is from over a year ago. A couple things have changed since then, notably the fact that going into the Dead Zone at the edge of the map brings with it a pretty noticeable warning (not entirely sure if it still does this in creative mode, thought I think it still does. They just don't attack you).
I can't quite figure out where you said you were located when you found the pit though... Mind elaborating a little?
Yes you can go back.
This is a thread from 2015....
