It is, first and foremost, aesthetics-focused exploration adventure game with some basic resource management bolted on top. And even once exploration and adventure is done - its just great for chilling around. There's also a small horror element to it, as many people are naturally horrified by deep water.
There are mods that make it difficult, though. I think one even poisons the air, so you can only breath inside your bases and vehicles, stuff like that. You might like that one, maybe.
That complaint is more about logistics than difficulty. Its not that its important to game's difficulty to be able to just kill that boneshark harassing you - its purely about the principle of: "If it wants to kill me - then i should be able to kill it in return".
Funnily enough: lack of weapons usually denotes either chilling games or horror games that don't want the player to be able to retaliate as to not ruin the horror.
Subnautica is stuck in an awkward middle ground where it kinda ended up being both at the same time, heh.
No I played the game on survival several times actually, you don't have to scour for materials because the sea floor is littered with resources. The reaper and ghost population are no trouble and no real threat they're quite easy to avoid I mean the worst that can happen is one of them trying to take a bite out of seamoth but then they let you go and it's easy to get away from them. The warpers are just annoying, a electric discharge from the seamoth sends them away, the same way it does the leviathans. I mean you don't even need to go near the Reapers there's nothing but a few resources where they live that you can find somewhere else. The ghost leviathan that swims above the lava lake isn't even a problem as soon as he swims to the other side you can literally walk down the hole he won't even notice you. Like I said the only way to die is if you do something really stupid.
And the idea that you can build a spaceship or a submarine out of a handful of materials is just lame. 11 ingredients to build a submarine? 9 Ingredients to build the prawn suit 4 To build the launch platform 4 To build the gantry 7 To build the boosters 5 For the fuel reserve and 4 To build the cockpit, not even Elon Musk is capable of doing that. Yes each of components do need the resources to build them but by this stage in the game you should be swimming in resources.
And I mean there are resources everywhere, you can pick them up one at a time or use the prawn suit drill and get a bunch all in one stop. Saying You have to scour for the resources is just a joke
Anyone that finds this game difficult is doing something very very wrong!
There are mods for this as well: some increase ingredient requirements by a lot.
Devs just didn't want people to spend half the game searching for titanium to build a single seamoth.
80% of resources actually go into base building. People love building their bases.
But moreover, this game isn't intended to be difficult. There are entire genres dedicated to people who want competitive play. This game is about exploration and the experience of being stranded on an aquatic planet. Some aspects of the survival, crafting, and especially inventory management could be better, but I don't really think this game would gain much by being more difficult.
And nerf stasis riffle. At least make creature still able to hurt you if you get close enough to their attack range
as someone else already pointed out, use "deathrun remade" from nexusmods.
try playing with no breathable atmo as its radiated above water - the mod is very configurable.
