No issues - Nope. It isn't a finished product yet.
AFAIHH, you cannot finish the game story within Nitrox yet.
So it's not a case if "if" you have an issue, but "when".
But we also know that over all it does work. So when I say 'you' I do mean the both of you and your friend.
Most of us on here are happy playing this game solo.
Long answer, depends very heavily on how much you care about that "first time" experience, which is a thing pretty much all of us on this forum wish we could wipe from our memory and experience all over again from scratch with no idea of what we are going to run into.
If you want me to go into detail on any of this, that will very quickly stray into *spoiler* territory.
You could do it, but why?
Depends on what part of this game you are interested in. It's designed as a lone survival experience where you are by yourself on an alien world. That experience will certainly be ruined, as will the story itself since you can't progress.
However, if you just want the underwater Minecraft part of this and don't care much about the story, the coop mod will generally be fine.
Whether a game is single or coop is one of those thing that has to be decided right back before any coding can be started.
We know the devs made a conscious choice to go down a single player path. If it had been "always meant to be" then the MP mod wouldn't have been nearly so hard to get working.
Plus as an indie game the only time limit for development were those set by the devs themselves.
Epic users can't go back to a legacy build so if your friend has the epic version they are out of luck.
The dev for the mod is working on 2.0 but they don't have a release date.
Sad thing is leave it to dev's to go the lazy route like this dev for subnautica where it takes a modder to do what the dev thought even said was impossible to do which is why I no longer supported the developer of subnautica, and never bought their second pile of poo.
I only buy games from developers I can trust, and this dev isn't one of those developers.
That is the story they wanted to tell, the atmosphere they wanted to create, and the style of gameplay they thought fit best.
It is clearly so marked.
If you didn't want a solo game to start with, you should have invested your time in a different game, rather than trying to shame-blame the dev team...for doing what they intended to do, and doing it well.
