Flares distract big creatures.
Flares are pretty much useless. Even if you do go cave diving without a seamoth, you would use a flashlight. Say you're being chased by a sand shark, and you throw the flare and it instantly swims towards it, giving you ample time to escape. (Flares attract everything hostile bigger than a biter, and smaller than a reaper.

Yeah, good idea.

Flares atract missels in movies and stuff because they are hot, and other things because they move.

Your bigger than a flare so the moving isn't going to work... the only thing that might is if it is light senstive.... which...well... would be awsome.

I can see a monster in a resorce rich area that eats bio-lumanesent things. There the only light sorces there and it will eat them up from time to time. If you don't use flares or flashlights, and keep lights off in the seamoth (should be an option if not! =p) it won't attack you... but if you make any light at all it will notice you and come for you.

That would be cool.... you could throw the flares into it's face to stun it, or past it in frount of it and it will chase the flare. hehe

or sothing atracted to very hot things would go after it too, some criters might eat creatures that float around volcanic vents.

Volcanic vents in real life are a bastion of life in a cold dark sea deepths... they are SWARMING with fish around them.

hunting creatures in abyssial depths have eyes that are incredibly well trained to spot bioluminescent fish if they aren't ambush predators. Assuming there is an animal in the future that is planned for such environmnets *cough* Sea Dragon *cough* wouldn't it be attracted to a much more visible light source than, say, a large floating rock that occasioanlly makes some silly noises?

Yah they wouldn't be able to tell how big or small the flare is though, its so bright it would be just a big glowy glurby splotch.

There eyes arn't made for lights that bright and they wouldn't be able to make out quite what it was.

If you threw it close to there face it would be like when you walk out of a movie during the day, lol... it would rear back and be temorarly blinded for a short amount of time...

If your thew it past it at a distance it would just be a real real bright moving object... it wouldn't be able to tell what it was, and it very likely won't be able to see you anymore.

Or it could just see it as a shiny thing and try to eat it. Like a stalker does.
Not to be a party pooper to a nice idea but:

Why do we need this?

Because flares are useless. And throwing one to distract something like in Jurassic park is cool.

Why would we want to distract something that doesn't respawn when we can use one of 2 op tools combined with a knife?

Because we might want to have some choice in what tools we employ?

Because flares are STILL useless. It gives a cheapish alternative to a repulsion cannon, as well as being ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome.

IF you have an ultimate means of dealing with an enemy, you're going to use it. (and if you don't it's because you know how poorly done these enemies are done.) The ultimate means in this game is just...killing the preds cause they don't respawn. The flare would be just as pointless as the inclusion of the gravity gun.

despite what you might think, some people enjoy the challenge that a predator presents. the fear and paranoia of "Is that sandshark about to come up and rip my legs off while i'm harvesting this quartz?" and for those who don't have a repulsion cannon or such, a flare would present an affordable means of escape.

You would have a fair point...
...if the game didn't already have the stasis rifle (which nothing is immune to) and the gravity gun. As well the stasis rifle is found in the kelp forest. Literally the second biome you visit (1st being safe shallows) Any fear in the game has to be artificailly made (besides the reaper leviathan's first encounter)

It's still a fair point, if you choose not to use those tools...
... like I do. ;)
