Unlock an indoor growing plot and plant Bulbo trees in it. You can cut the tree for seeds that you can eat that give food and water, then replant the last seed when the tree is destroyed. 2-3 trees in your base is enough to keep you sustained.

How Long does it Take to unlock this

A couple minutes if you know where to go.

If you want a hint: Trees and indoor grow beds aren't found under water.

When you combine fish with salt it wont spoil but the indoor growing plot is still the best choice

Not infinite? Sure about that?

Right, fish respawn after a while, and there's a very large area to hunt for them, so it's highly unlikely that anyone will run out. Getting enough food and water is supposed to be a challenge early game, and it only gets earlier gradually. It's not something you figure out and then you don't have to worry about it anymore. If you really find getting food that annoying that's what Freedom Mode is for.

There 3 good choises for which plant to grow:

1) Lantern tree. Easy to gather and doesn't require replanting. A lot of fruits grow that automatically regrow. Downside: fruits provide practically no water and food value isn't big

2) Bulbo tree. Slightly less food value thanLantern tree. But provide both food and water when eaten, but deplits after certain amount of cuts and would require replanting. A well ballanced choise. But if you do not have problems with water supplies then pick Lantern tree

3) Marble - provide both more food and water value than both of Lantern and Bulbo tree. At 1st glance it seem like obvious choise, except... you can only pick one marble at a time and replant for every single bite. Quite annoying and mandatory to eat few and cut others for seeds and plant each individual marble which takes a lot of time. The second downside is that you often can't reach to cut marble to get seeds or can't reach marble on corners depending on placement of growbed. Forcing shoving yourself around to pick/cut marble and sometimes you have to jump and cut because knife tiny reach. It's annoying. Despite being the best food/water plant, the clunkiness and time makes it not worth the effort with much easier and simplier alternatives

Better for exploration though. You can't really take plants as they will rot super quick, provide less food and take more space.

So plants are best for eating and refilling at home or as quick snack. Salted fish for exploration and expeditions outside of base

There's always just packing the thermal knife and knifing a fish or two while out and about.

One correction, Justice.
When properly managed, Bulbo Trees, on a pot for pot, bed for bed basis, provide EXACTLY the same food value as Marble Melons, and they provide slightly MORE hydration.
They also require slightly fewer player actions / clicks.
They are planted/ harvested/ managed in a completely different schedule/method than MMs, however.
(The above is a mathmatical certainty once the first crops of each are mature.)

It can be argued, however, that since the Lantern Fruit Tree is SO-o-o low effort once it is mature, it IS the best single food source, if tree pots are strategically placed. This is ESPECIALLY true once you have the Stillsuit, and you are using the PRAWN for most 'outside' missions.

My gardens / gardening always ends up making use of all 3. But I find Bulbo most useful in the early(-ish) game, and Lantern Fruit Trees near the Hatches the most useful in the late game.

OP - you never 'run out' of food fish. You can mostly deplete a small area temporarily in the early game, but you just have to range a little further. And they do get replaced.
Put in an Alien Containment Unit (big aquarium) in the mid game, and your supply of the best value food fish is literally endless.

I would say that "early game" endless food is accomplished by dropping a grav trap in the shallows near your escape pod. There will always be 10+ fish stuck to it for easy pickup and processing.

It's an ocean planet. You are not going to eat the entire ecosystem so they are in fact practically infinite. In a game sense they are factually infinite.

By that I mean you don't strictly need a better food source.
You can also always turn hunger and thirst off if you don't like that.

Fish respawn at a much faster rate than you will starve to death, so don't worry about it. As mentioned above, a grav trap near your base will trivialize early game fishing.

Yeah, or the propulsion cannon. Once you know where to find that blueprint, it makes fishing dead easy.
