You never see another character, and you only see your avatar, in reflection, about two times in an entire playthrough...if you work at it.
The other creatures are ... not very cartoon-y, if you have time to take note while running and hiding.
Below Zero kinda addressed that, but screwed up lighting instead.
There's nothing out there other than straight horror games.
Will have to wait for subnautica 2, see what they do with that.
What is SCP mate?
The “cartoony” thing is unfortunately a general trend in games.
There was once a statement in the past that games will never be (photo)realistic? Why? Because people supposedly can't tell the difference between games and reality (especially with regard to so-called killer games).
In return, we get cartoon and plastic graphics partly childish and/or color oversaturated games that are sometimes so over-the-top that any freak show seems harmless in comparison.
I find the murky abyss when there's darkness in all directions more horrifying than the jump scares the creatures give. Not being able to see anything - but imagining what could be out there - is always scarier, especially if there are just hints of noises. Lets your imagination do the work for it.
