They're gone forever. There are plans for some kind of lost-item-retrieval system to be implemented in the future though. Just something I read on the Steam forums when a developer replied to a thread that raised the same subject.

I guess my game is bugged. I'm playing survival mode and I have died twice. Both times I have spawned in my lifepod with everything I had gathered. I was rather disapointed that there was no death penalty.

The game auto saves whatever you were carring everytime you enter/exit your base or pod. You will only lose the items you gathered from that point

No, I mean I have the items still on me that I had gathered after leaving the base/pod.

Then you glitched. It does not work that way. If you leave the life pod, collect some quartz, then die, that quartz is gone.

Yeah, I've heard that. What happened to me must have been a bug or glitch as you said.

If you delete the cache files I believe new nodes for metals, crashfish, etc spawn. If you are stuck and missing some things that may help.

Really? Will I lose anythign else, or is it just spawns? I need crashfish and have looked everywhere, I don't want to bug my game out but if deleting the cache will make new nodes appear, then I'm all for it.

It's not going to break your save game if you do it correctly. It's just two folders with cache in the name that you have to delete. Back them up first if you want to feel safer doing it. I've done it a bunch of times and all it does is reset things like dead fish, spawns etc.

It's the talk of the town on these forums; supposedly it helps with performance after a few hours of gameplay resulting in lag from loading the cache of things you've interacted with.

look around on the forums there are many tutorials for deleting cache folders. it should help you find crashfish and such.

If you have any floating lockers floating in the water, those will disapear I found out. Otherwise, pretty much nothing you have built or possess will disapear.

Still no way to recover your ♥♥♥♥ a year later. I guess they just stopped working on this and ♥♥♥♥ anyone who gave them money.

If you are out farming and die before returning, you lose everything you picked up since you exited your base, Cyclops or Lifepod.

The Seamoth does not save your inventory.

Such a toxic post to be necroing a thread.

I don't find any trouble losing items but almost every trip out of my base/cyclops is planned and I understand the area I am in or going to. my current game I haven't died once.
