How long was Subnautica in Early Access?
Just curious seeing as now Subnautica 2 has been 'officially' announced. Given that we pretty much know early access won't come out until 2025 I'm wondering how long after that until we get the complete game. Just want to know what kind of agonising wait I should expect seeing as how I want to wait for full release to enjoy the game.

Subnautica - 3 years, 1 month
Below Zero - 2 years, 3 months
Moonbreaker - 1 year, 4 months

The shorter the E A phase, the more Bugs will be in the Game. Give the Devs the needed time to find as much Bugs as possible. Or better said... give the E A Players the needed Time ;D

The original Subnautica was a somewhat experimental game, especially in the early phases. A long EA makes sense. BZ kind of has an excuse with the change of staff and rewriting.

Based on this, my own expectations are that if nothing goes horribly wrong and the game does what players and developers expect it to, early access will be on the shorter side, maybe even less than a year. If there is sudden staff turnover, fan backlash, a need to radically change something about the game or something else unexpected, it could be quite a bit longer.

Well you also have to account the fact the devs want to make the map larger than subnautica 1 so it could affect time

Plus they (Obraxis) has already said in interview, in so many words, that they will be releasing sections of the map incrementally as they are developed during Early Access. Con't KNOW if that might prolong the process overall, but I suspect it might...for the sake of a better final product.

I'll take quality over speed anytime... within reason. :-) Patience is the virtue that brings the golden sunshine to the land of darkness.

BZ probably should have stayed in EA significantly longer, given the disconnected story, handful of plot holes, janky physics, broken Snow Fox and Ice Worms, and lots of ill-conceived tech choices.

Was? I still get bugs that were from EA today lmao.. and before you say "oh its your ♥♥♥♥ pc" no its the same across my last 3 systems as ive upgraded. Its the ♥♥♥♥ game and its bugs lmao and its a documented bug thats been reported many times and ignored.

"Left early access"... Well maybe they "said" it left but in reality its ♥♥♥♥ a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game thats got way too much hype for what it is a early access game that needs development lmao.

What bug? Board the aurora or entering the alien planetary gun that shoots the rescue ship down at the start the game and sometime after that all water on the map despawns and you walk on ocean floor lol. Reloading, respawning does nothing save corrupted game broke. Ive recreated the bug several times as have others.

Weird, I've played through multiple times and never experienced that. Guess you're unlucky.

The Game Engine has flaws that cant be fixed. A major one is a Clipping Error, that comes in different Shapes. In the past, i got stuck with the Prawn several times in alien infrastructure. I saw different Creatures yeeted across the Map, after they got stuck in the Seafloor and then unstuck by the Game. The clipping through the Ocean, that you described is also something that i had once (years ago). Also, on an older/weaker PC, after i played for Hours, i accidentally clipped under the Seafloor with my Moth, because the Game lagged and the Seafloor didnt appear fast enough.
Not long ago, i saw a Thread of someone who got stuck with his Cyclops and asked the Forum how to leave the Cave-System. After trying to reach his Position, it was clear that he clipped through a Wall, so he couldnt leave.
So Clipping is THE major Problem of Subnautica and after all these Years im confident to say... that is an Engine Problem. The Dev's options are limited, when it comes to Engine errors.

Another Game that i played attempts something big.... they prepare to upgrade the Game Engine to a newer, supported Version. Exchanging the Engine of a Game, even if its within the same Engine-Family, is ALOT of work, causes alot of Bugs and Devs have to re-program chunks of the Game.
Maybe the Devs of Subnautica will attempt something similar in the Future, but i guess that makes only Sense, if its financially viable. Since Subnautica is an old Game by now, i wouldnt bet on that option^^
