Wait, you actually _like_ driving the cyclops? To me it's like driving a Winnebago when you're used to driving a sports car. Don't get me wrong, it has it's uses, but a 30m long sub driving simulator was not what I signed up for.

Try Timberborn, beavers have submarines and nuclear weapons.

...(video)...
The video looks pretty much the same as when I pilot the Cyclops. One difference I could see was that I thought ampeels attacked a cyclops; maybe you have to be on slow or have silent running active, the video didn't say. Also, aren't there crab squid and warpers in that trench? There weren't any visible in the video. I'm currently using the Cyclops like a mobile base -- find somewhere relatively safe close to where I want to explore and park. Like a mobile home, it spends most of the time parked. I get closer to what I want to look at in the prawn, and do the actual exploration with the seaglide. The moth is great early to mid-game, but it's too fragile to explore the lost river. So, like I said, the cyclops has its uses and I do use it, but it's not a highlight of the game for me.

Alas the Cyclops - what might have been.

Ironically, that's - kind of - what I did sign up for, at least at first. I wanted a cool submarine game, but didn't want/have the hardware for any of the more in-depth (pun intended) sub simulators, and couldn't figure out how to get Silent Hunter 4 working properly. I'm glad I went with Subnautica though; there's so much more that's cool and interesting!

As of now I don't particularly mind driving the Cyclops because it feels nice and safe. If you're used to piloting the 'Moth, it definitely feels bulky and slow, but I'm much more comfortable in the Cyclops than anywhere else other than a base.

Ampeels WILL attack a Cyclops, if you pass through their territory.

It is just that after awhile you realize that if that is all that is happening, the alarm is loud, but the damage is small. And the ampeel territory is small. You leave it behind. And Ampeel electrical damage is self-repairing.

The upshot is that, if you are in the Cyclops, and you don't plan to park right on top of them, you can pretty much ignore passing near ampeels.

About the second time I took my Cyclops out I was attacked by an ampeel, the engine caught fire, and I got hull damage I couldn't repair. (I actually posted about this a while ago.) So I;m a bit gun shy after that; if I see anything more hostile than a stalker I back off and find a safer place to park. I guess I'll have to man up and learn to how to get past the critters; it's probably more a psychological hurdle more than anything else. Meanwhile I feel invincible with my seaglide in my reinforced diving suit. Even if they do somehow catch me, the suit reduces damage by like half. I'm pretty sure I'd be done with this game by now if it wasn't for needing to breath every so often.

Update: FWIW I managed to get my cyclops as far as the giant cave tree. I'll let it "rest" there until I get the next depth module for it. So home stretch.

In the release spectrum of the developers:
(Don't talk to me about "Shoulda been a DLC". This is the way it actually was / is marketed.)

Subnautica - packaged sold as a discrete game. 2018.

Subnautica: Below Zero - packaged and sold as a discrete game. 2021.
Presented publicly as a sequel/2nd game in the Subnautica series.
(Note: Does not require either the load of, nor knowledge of the original game to load/play.)
(Generally treated by UWE and the industry as the 2nd game of the franchise.)

(Recent "Livin' Large" update was nicknamed within UWE and to this forum and the fanbase as "Subnautica 2.0" during later development, presumably due to the extensive code optimization and consolidation of core game mechanics code to SN: BZ's cleaner, more modern standards.)

(Unnamed Subnautica Project) - cited by Mr Cleaveland and other UWE representatives as "the next Subnautica game" and/or "the third Subnautica game" in interviews. Discussed as being a discrete stand-alone game.
This project has sometimes been referred to in this forum as "Subnautica 3.0", although I do not know if anyone from UWE studio has ever used that shorthand handle.
Est. late 2025 to late 2026+.

The Planet Crafter has no submarine but it is heavily inspired from Subnautica. I loved that game. Theere is less accent on story and more on "numbers go up" because you terraform a planet and watch every atmospheric parameter rise as you play and build stuff. Wait for full release if you can.

I have a hard time driving a Cyclops:(

Practice makes,...well, ... better. It helps to realize that it is NOT intended nor efficient to go fast.

But you can probe the deep with your nightly one-eyed cylindrical vessel. Didn't anyone call out this writers-room joke before the 3D team got their hands on it?
