I like to use them for marking actually needed / important pathways on the islands. Keeps you from losing that one very important cave mouth. (You need to put them close enough together that you can see the ones ahead & behind in daylight, though.)
The light sticks are somewhat useful with exploring wrecks, however, as they provide a good amount of light and leave you free to use all other tools.
For example if there's a swarm of bonesharks blocking access to a wreck, swim above them and drop a stick so they'll swarm about that instead.
