New computer: distances aren't drawing quick enough. (Spoilers)
I'm heading down to lava lake and as I jump down in my PRAWN suit, the walls disappear like it is an open cavern, but then a wall fills in just as I get there. This is so annoying.

What setting lets me draw further away, so it fills in at a greater distance?

I have a RTX 3060 12GB and I get 100fps currently at low presets.

The "details" option in your main menu (hidden while in a game) is controlling the clipmapping.

If you have a low preset, the detail option should be low as well.

Make sure you have high at least. And if you want to have further improvement, change the json as written above.

Thats the new normal im afraid. I had better quality with a toaster in 2018 than now. Moving the game from hdd to your ssd might help if its already not there. Or maybe playing the older versions of the game

The game has terrible pop in and lousy distance rendering, but they can be alleviated quite a bit. Below is a way to configure the game, taken from a post back in December. I use it, and can attest that the difference is night and day. Makes the game look quite stunning. It requires a powerful card, but I'd hazard a guess that you could probably use this and still get 60 fps with your 3060. I have a 3080 ti, and it runs beautifully for me. Try it out and see how it works. I didn't come up with this, so don't credit me.

If you want an enhanced render distance with less popin use this data and overwrite the clipmaps high.json / make a backup before.
60FPS in base and until 100FPS in outer regions.
Measured on a RTX3070

Merry Xmas for all Subnautica divers :-)

Yeah, I just wanted to know the setting within the game to allow more detailed drawing distances in the game, so it draws it further away from me.

I thought it was called, "Draw Distance" IIRC?

It is called that in my city builder, but that may be a different feature as the city builder is a stationary ant farm you can zoom in and out of, compared to this game that has to draw things in an open 3D world constantly. Plus animated fish and schools of fish, that I'm sure require a bit of AI activity as well.

In my city builder, it is a slider bar to adjust it.

Not all games work the same, there isn't a simple setting to change that. The above configuration should help though.

Honestly I heard the 3060 12gb sucks. I have a 3080 12gb and I still have pop ins at times, but I only play in VR so idk if that makes a difference. You could try the performance mod

3060 12 gb AND 3090 owner here . Reports are false. 3060 12 gb is a beast of a card at the price .

Good to know. Then he should definitely try the performance mod. I am going to be installing it this week also

The "details" option in your main menu (hidden while in a game) is controlling the clipmapping.

If you have a low preset, the detail option should be low as well.

Make sure you have high at least. And if you want to have further improvement, change the json as written above.

Yeah, I have a 6800 XT 16GB and it has pop-ins as well, but not as bad as the 3060. I mean it is not terrible like it was when a piece of wreckage would pop-up right in from of the seamoth at full speed and ten feet in front of me in the 1.0 version.. lol

But if it becomes a nuisance, then I may try to edit the config file. I had to do it before.

OK, I went and made all of my settings high and my FPS cut in half. But it seems smooth.

But, I went out and crafted a thermal plant outside at the edge in the lava lake a little. The dragon spawned about halfway out there. so after successfully crafting the plant, I went to craft a power transmitter and I got hit by a fireball and died before I could select the power transmitter.

When I sea-glided back, there was no thermal power plant there? Did the fireball destroy it? I have never had anything I crafted destroyed before. Well, other than vehicles.

Did a fireball destroy it?

Maybe the lake swallow it? but I was right at the edge of the land.
Gamerzilla Feb 26, 2023 @ 4:26pm
Anything you build can be destroyed by sea dragons. They shotgun fireballs all over the place, even when attacking lava lizards or other things in the area. Never build too close to that area...
sushileafbeats Feb 27, 2023 @ 8:38am
All I'll add is making those changes to the json file works damn wonders. I'm usually iffy about changing setting files, but I tried that reddit post referenced here back in december, and I am so glad I did. ABSOLUTELY zero pop in for me now. It cost like 5-10 fps in places, but I had that to spare.

And yes, it was likely a rogue fireball. Creatures are not coded to outright target bases, but the base can take damage from nearby attacks. So if the sea dragon decides a lava lizard next to your structures is dinner, so is your structure.

Can only keep a base down there if you kill the sea dragons.
MarkJohnson Feb 27, 2023 @ 11:28am
Actually my MP room was fine, it was just the thermal plant. I also built my scanner room at the lava caste, where the sea dragon spawns, and it is always shooting at my base, but no issues. I also have moonpool I recently added for my prawn.

But my scanner room has been hit several times, and my MP at the facility has been hit 3 or 4 times now. No mention of damage at all.

But my saved game has been corrupted. When I went outside, after my prawn was incinerated at 100% health, I left the facility and when I went through the invisible door.

When I dipped down so I could be as close to the ground as possible, it glitched me under it and the outside ground floor. At which time, the fireball lizard glitched with me, plus the dragon spawned too, but I did an immediate 180 and went back inside. All three of us were inside the main room, the fireballs missed me, and the walls prevented the dragon from swatting me.

After the dragon despawned, the fireball lizard was trapped in the hall with me. But this is when I built the first thermal plant, so maybe it was glitched, and why it exploded.

I went back three times trying to build that thermal plant, and every time I forgot something and it was gone when I came back. By the third time I said it was time to start over. lol

I was also out of magnetite, and had to go back up and get more magnetite from the river. It was taking forever to build that thing. So, I just started a new game. lol
