Sorry, 3rd person view?
I know it is a silly question, just want to know about it.

There isn't 3rd person view.

Generally third person view means creating animating a human figure in-game. It's much easier to animate fish, bugs, etc. so that's what you see. So it's a matter of budget, no third person, no other humans visible in the game, no horses or other walking mammals. You see a lot of games like that for the same reason; the last one I played other than Subnautica was Firewatch. AAA games have the budget to do that kind of thing, and AAA games cost correspondingly more. I consider Subnautica a AA game, much higher production values than an indie game, but if you know what to look for you can see compromises made to keep within budget .

Having seen other players swimming around using multiplayer mods, I can unequivocally say that you REALLY don't want to see yourself swimming XD

Now now, don't get ahead of yourself.

This is an interesting topic in game design:

Coding:
  • Camera positioning without it clipping through terrain is part of the coding problem for 3rd person view .
  • Then there's the player hitbox, which has to conform closely to the player model to look credible. SN's Unity engine is set up for this, but maybe not so well for a fluid figure swimming (some game engines do this much better than others).

Game-play:
  • 3rd person is 'easier' to play since you don't get flanked by enemies so easy.
  • Arguably 1st person is more immersive since you are looking through the protagonist's eyes the whole time.
(Both these make 1st person a good choice for creating horror game tension, and I think work well creating Subnautica's thalassaphobia).
  • But for RPG games where you can upgrade armour and change clothing, 3rd person is kind of engaging in a similar way to dressing up a toy doll (sorry, Action figure I mean). Not so applicable to SN though, where you only got a PRAWN suit as the single 'armour' option.

So it's partly a creative choice. So some AAA franchises still opt for first person view (e.g. Skyrim, Fallout, Faycry, Dsihonoured etc.) and some don't (Dark souls).

Technically, you do get several clothes upgrades, the radiation and then reinforced suits and the stillsuit that I'm sure someone uses. In Below Zero, you also get the latter two plus the cold weather one but let's admit it it's still all about the reinforced dive suit.

Still, personally I feel first person works better for survival and horror type games, and both definitely apply to Subnautica. Plus, saves having to animate Ryley's face for all sorts of actions and emotions, mostly terror.

(Skyrim lets you swap to 3rd person, but that makes it trickier to land arrows especially while sneaking. Don't lie, you all know you did this.)

Oh yeah I forgot about the various dive suits. Too bad for the fashion victims
