Do you (still?) find Subnautica to be scary?
I was walking a prawn from around the grand reef area through the crag fields and behind the aurora, as I hadn't really checked out the crag fields before. Figured there was not much there and I was pretty sure that's where the map ended.

Given it was night time and I was about 300m down, I was having trouble telling where I was. I figured since there was absolutely nothing interesting around, I was probably near a less used part of the crash zone. I totally couldn't reach the surface with the stock prawn jets to see how close I was to the aurora, but I tried anyway just because, literally thinking "I hear nothing and this place is boring but there's probably a reaper somewhere here." What do you know, as my prawn is suspended in black water, a reaper just shows up, and grabs it for a good while.

That was probably the most jarring jumpscare I've had in the game, but my reaction was to calmly drill it in the face for a bit and then go back. Honestly, the start of the game can be a bit stressful because of shallow crush depths, then once you get better things, oxygen and depth are less of a big deal and hostile fauna becomes considerably more tiresome.

So, I'm not sure if I ever found Subnautica to actually be scary, but I've certainly found it to be annoying. I generally don't bother with the stasis or propulsion rifles due to their size, so I find myself either ignoring enemies, or knifing/punching particularly aggressive ones.

I wonder which has kept people from exploring more in this game: fear, or impatience?

honestly i don't find it hard or scary they just nerf everything til its almost useless to hide how small the maps really are

the nerfing was for below zero more than base subnautica.

Even after playing hundreds of hours, and beating the game at least 6 times, the game is as scary as always. I absolutely refuse to visit the crash zone, the dunes, the underwater mountains, and the crag fields... way too scary to me.

Nope.

It stopped being scary the moment i got Prawn and Stasis Rifle in my first playthrough.

And after i got to know the wildlife better it's not scary anymore at all it's just a relaxing dive with fishies.

For me it's scary as hell. Darkness of the deep and leviatans' screams.
I usually keep hanging out in the base and safe shallows. Going deeper only if I really need to or I get really bored. Not for long ;)

UMMMM NO I never really thought it was very scary not like ARK where things are always coming out of nowhere to eat you.

Sadly the Sounds are more scary than the monsters .

Honestly, I don't care about any wildlife. Merely staring at a black empty space is gut wrenching to me.

Yea i don't have thalassophobia so that doesn't work for me. That was only scary at first due to me not knowing the game's creatures.

Cause not seeing from where an attack could emerge was a bit horror like. But that was gone the moment i learned all subnautica creatures and how they act.

So the dark void is only disorienting now and no more scary.

When I was younger it was a lot scarier, but seeing Leviathans clip through and awkward animations, it's just not as terrifying

Although its not nearly as bad as the first day I do still feel uneasy playing but a fear of mine is deep water.

Why do you have the impression that people, in general, do not explore a lot in this game?

There IS a class of gamer who is all about "Get through the story line to the final goal, and claim another game WON; what's next?"

But an awful lot of SN gamers spend the time to look around A LOT, All Over. It is one of the things that keeps the active fan base so large.

I Just start a new game to beat the game again :steamhappy:

I have explored probably around 40% of the map, and have no interest in ever exploring the rest.

After beating the story Subnautica basically is a sandbox game to me now.
I do survival stuff , explore , build bases , breed and play with fishes and overally chill.

It's why i greatly appreciated that devs added Custom game mode into BZ.
Subnautica 1 didn't really need it due to differently paced story and progression but it's a very welcomed addition in BZ. (tho some options from the Custom mode would be still nice in SB1)

once you get the prawn with a grappling hook it becomes a lot less scary for everything but prob ampeels, warpers and sea dragon. since the ampeels can emp you, warpers can warp you out of the prawn and the sea dragon can clip through walls and drag you into lava falls while fighting.

that being said i store everything on my cylops once i get it and use bases as charging stations so there's still tension when i have my cyclops near a real threat like a reaper.
