That's the problem with the islands.....being invisible in a fog bank till you get right up on them....makes it real easy to get off course and skip right past them. Have done it so many times it's unreal. It's why I always make a point of setting a beacon at the islands as soon as I find them the first time.
I can easily see why someone might want to go there "early".
As for the radio signals not being "lasting beacons", you can turn them back on in the beacon manager; that's the tab just to the right of the blueprints in your "Pip-Boy" (the interface that TAB opens up). You can also change beacons' colors, which helps me keep track of what I'm doing between sessions; I usually turn my current "goal marker" yellow, to make it easily identifiable and obvious.
