Go back to the escape pod, look at the clouds you went toward, and turn right until you see the other clouds. Go toward those, instead.

That's the problem with the islands.....being invisible in a fog bank till you get right up on them....makes it real easy to get off course and skip right past them. Have done it so many times it's unreal. It's why I always make a point of setting a beacon at the islands as soon as I find them the first time.

Lifepod 19 (and the rally point from Keen) is a beacon for the floating island and the Sunbeam landing point is a beacon for the mountain island. The only reason to go to either before the story directs you there is if you already know they are there and you are going early. True, there is no lasting beacon on the mountain so putting a beacon there would be smart.

I use beacons cuz I can name them. I don't usually remember which lifepod number is where. I know where (in general) to go look for lifepods' but, in middle of gameplay....wouldn't remember it's # 19 that is close to the island. I mean....now that I've played it several times.....lol. But, my first couple times, no. I still use the beacons just cuz I can name them and it's quicker / easier to know what that location is.

The Degassi bases have all kinds of scannables for tools and base-building, as well as multiple growable food items on the islands (and the growbeds themselves).
I can easily see why someone might want to go there "early".

As for the radio signals not being "lasting beacons", you can turn them back on in the beacon manager; that's the tab just to the right of the blueprints in your "Pip-Boy" (the interface that TAB opens up). You can also change beacons' colors, which helps me keep track of what I'm doing between sessions; I usually turn my current "goal marker" yellow, to make it easily identifiable and obvious.
