Ghost Ray Behaviour

For those of you who don't know about the Ghost Ray, it is an in-development creature scheduled to spawn in the Lost River. It looks like a subspecies of Jellyray and/or Rabbit Ray, and while this suggests it will be passive (it probably will be), I realized something in their concept art. Within the branches of the Ghost Tree is a large, spherical-shaped mass. One possible explanation for this is that it is simply a large seed pod, but I considered something else. What if this mass is a sort of nest or hive for the Ghost Rays? It would certainly explain why they are swarming around the tree in the manner displayed in the art (though it could just be an excellent food source for them). So what if Ghost Rays are actually Defensive? Maybe they'll be like bees on Earth- they couldn't care less about you, provided that you stay away from their hive and family. Imagine approaching the tree only to have a horde of these things emerge in defense. To any who have read this- what are your thoughts? Do you agree? Disagree? Perhaps you even have an idea for different behaviour?

I think they're related to, but not a subspecies of jellyrays. Personally I think they should have similar AI, but what if they could fight back somehow? Maybe if you get too close they'll sting you, like jellyfish on earth. Maybe it could've evolved as a defense against those nasty spine eels? Mybe the "tree" from the concept art is their only food source, and they flock around it? That's my theory.
