Deconstruction
I asked a question in this forum a while ago about getting rid of excess titanium and one person responded by saying I could deconstruct those floating boxes after putting excess materials like titanium in there... Question now is: How do I deconstruct stuff? I've tried pressing "E" with the Habitat Builder but that doesn't work. What does? Even if I don't want to get rid of all my titanium, getting some back from the floating crates I don't need would still be helpful. If anyone knows something, your advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

Actually, the best way to get rid of materials (and even fish) is to put them in a LOCKER and then deconstruct that. The floating boxes are deployable objects the habitate builder doesn't interact with.

Does the "Press E" information appear on the screen? You have to be close to an object to deconstruct it.

You can only deconstruct objects built with the habitat builder. The deployable floating crates are constructed in the fabricator, carried in inventory, and deployed in the same manner as a beacon. They do not deconstruct.

Ohhh, OK. That must have been what the guy in the other thread meant, then. Thanks. I will try that.

No, it doesn't. That was why I wondered. I tied it a few times, too, but nope. A few other games do allow you to deconstruct crafted objects with certain tools or crafting stations so this might be a good idea for a future Subnautica update.

Totally agreed. I addressed this in my suggestions thread: http://steamcommunity.com/app/264710/discussions/0/368542844482849358/

so if you want to get rid of something in your inventory (the starting low-capacity air tank) for example - all you can do is drop it in the ocean? You should be able to deconstruct it for resources.

There is a trash can you can build which destroys anything you put into it. It likely did not exist *four years ago* when this thread happened.

And the starting tank is not something it would make any sense at all to destroy, it upgrades to the better tanks.

Yes, I remember when the trash can was added into the game. It was indeed added at a later time. Around that time I also believe the locker exploit was also fixed, no longer allowing you to deconstruct lockers while something was in it.

This is correct, they added a trash can and you can just dump undesired items (like all the salt produced by the water filtration machines) for deletion from your game. (dumping items in the ocean actually bloats your game file size and can cause problems, plus it's bad for the environment!)

You do get a few moments to snatch it back before it's fully deleted, in case you change your mind or realize you might have put the wrong item into the trash, so you can save it.

You could always just not remove the salt from the filters. They'll still produce water at the same rate.

I think this thread was made before trash cans.

It was. I should know. I made it. So there is no need for anyone to revive it just to say "Use the trash can." I know that already.
