Why is Subnautica a top seller on Steam?
Did some famous Youtuber point it out as similar to No Man's Sky or something?

Subnautica has been a top seller since long before No Man's Sky had been released.

ditto. No Man's Sky was actually a huge disappointment for me. Subnautica is still one of my top games.

Really? I've been keeping an eye on the top ten sellers for a while. Am I just that blind? :)

Subnautica is played by almost all popular gaming-youtubers except pewdiepie. More importantly the game is easily approachable, fresh and beautiful. That is why already hundred thousand people are playing Subnautica already, although Subnautica has not given any big advertisements

I haven't seen any advertisements or PC gaming articles about it at all. That's why I was a little surprised to see it appear in the top ten sellers.

What a surprise! Quality can sell without advertisements. ;p

Subnautica started life back in October 2014 when it was first released through Humble Bundle as a Special Edition, but in very early test stages. It wasn't until January 2015 that is finally took on life for players to thoroughly explore like now, though it was still a very small world at that time. Over 2015 and up to now, the game has garnered more and more attention by players of survival and underwater exploration games, eventually leading to YTubers doing let's plays, though I was among the first when I started doing them back in February of 2015. My friend, JustAllInOneResource, got me hooked on doing videos back then. He has a YT channels as well.

ARK was my gateway to gaining interest in many of these survival games that are in early access, especially Subnautica and Empyrion, since there is a lot of overlap in YouTubers playing the three games, though I am not playing any of them yet because I haven't kept up with computer hardware.

Because it rules?

Wild guess.

It's not hard to see why Subnautica is successful. It's been very highly rated, development has been constant, YouTubers like Markiplier and Jacksepticeye have done extended series on it, and they got nice bumps in sales numbers with numerous discounts in the last year.

I'm glad to see it's so successful. As someone with experience developing software, I really applaud their open development methodology and hope that other game developers take note. So far, this is really the best model for any Early Access game I've purchased.

My boyfriend found it for me while looking at new indie games. I'm huge into survival genre since I found NEO Scavenger a few years ago, so he thought it would be right up my alley. I love playing when I have solo time, but without multiplayer, DotA, ARK, and the Forest are overshadowing it pretty hardcore.

Honestly, if they would take someone on to implement multiplayer or at least let that one guy release a multiplayer mod, I would readily buy 6 additional copies on day one. It's that good. Its also a fresh take on surviving without the use of weapons. You get a knife. Good luck fighting off a Reaper with one. Took me half an hour while broadcasting live to do so with the aid of the stasis rifle.

Unlike many other games in the genre, the scary things never stop being scary even when youve got their number

Please don't make this another of the hundreds of MP/Co-Op threads. We've got enough of that. MP isn't going to happen any time soon. Mods of that caliber would most likely create more problems than its worth considering that new elements to the game always bring a boatload of bugs that have to be fixed. You don't fight off the Reaper, you run away. Once you get the Seamoth and the perimeter defense module, one little zap after it grabs the sub will send it running.
