Is this game in surround sound?
It seems like just stereo

Confirmed stereo audio. Sent feedback regarding the support for 5.1 earliar today.

I use my 7.1 surround headset and it sounds great. It could be tweaked a bit more.

Well it is still only Stereo (2.1) channel output. You are most likely using surround software emulation via the headset. It is not encoded, nor 7.1 discrete.

Thanks for the confirmation. I am shocked. Positional sound is the most immersive aspect a survival scary game like this can have. The Forest does it extremely well.

It is most likely the audio solution they are using. Hopefully they can update the Unity engine to use at the very least Audiokinetic Wwise, at least then it will have channel emulation embedded for 3d Surround. FMOD would be a cheap alternative as well, and I am 100% sure Unity supports it up to 5.1 channel.

It says in the Troubleshooting sticky that it does use FMOD.

I thought so, as it is native to Unity. The issue then is the channel encoding, and soruce files for the actual audio samples. Sadly, it may be too late in the development cycle to alter these file sources...

EDIT: Would love to hear some feedback from the team on this matter.

As I am sure they are using .ogg or .wav files via the FMOD studio .dll file and sub-files. In my experience these have to be mapped to specific coordinated output sources. At least they are with Unreal Engine's SDK(s) e.g. device enumeration.

Any devs present?

I thought my rear speakers broke but then again this game does not support 5.1 damn it!

I remember playing Alien: Isolation... Surround sound changes allot... And this game with VR support and all makes it even more important to have surround. I play this in VR and would love better surround.

One can't simply compare different software experiences to use it as a benchmark for other software. There are vast differences in the buget, license, and engine pipeline between the two games. Unity's engine DOES use an audio codec that allows for surround sound; however it needs to be utlized as such. Otherwise it defaults to 2.1. Which is the case here.

Albeit, Alien Isolation is very much a larger budget title, and a totally different genre altogether. The soundscape was a key element to the title's success given the playstyle and design direction.

or you could be immersive enough to realize....you are a human...underwater......in a suit with a helmet.....plus possibly in a seamoth/cyclops......are you really going to know where the sound of something is coming from?

hahah, well I have scuba dived before and it is silent down there...I am happy for any sound.

Still no surround. Come on guys...... even an EA Unity title out in Feb has it.....WHY NOT SUBNAUTICA.. You want it to be immersive.....and VR......not immersive when you only have stereo.....Defeats the immersion in so many ways.

I know I'm over a year late for this thread but I'm a SCUBA diver too and when someone is using a DPV (a "seaglide") you can hear them and where they are.
Since I've dived in near zero visibility conditions too (essentially keeping my hand on my buddy's tank and vice versa) we would tap on our tanks with the (flat) of our dive knives to get the attention of another.
You can hear things very well posistionally underwater and I'm grateful that you can as it alerted me to the moron jetskier who thought my inflatable dive flag marker was some sort of obstacle to drive around and over. If I didn't hear "whirrrrr" of him passing overhead right before I surfaced and emptied my BCD he would have nearly taken my head off.
Needless to say he got a very harsh talking to.

As well as that I've heard from other divers who've been lucky to dive around dolphins that they can hear their clicks and know which direction they're in.

I wish they had added 5.1, it wouldn't have been hard and would have made a game where you spend 90% of your time immersed, much, much more immersive.

Again I apologise for resurrecting this thread, I've played since day one and in the past year set my PC up toy TV then wanted surround sound, bought a POS second hand HTIB which died in a week as the speakers provided were like 4 ohms so I got to setting up a really nice 5.1 system (though my centre speaker is a bit lacking in treble so I'll likely replace it though it was a bargain anyway; £20 for a Tannoy MXc in mint condition) which cost me a fair bit (though I got everything cheap off Gumtree (a UK Craigslist type site) and 5.1 games sound great and after living with it it's hard to go back to stereo in a game as immersive as this.
