With that you can build underwater bases. You can't extend or modify the pod. It just stays the same and could be used as a back-up when say, your base(s) run out of power.
Any other hints? I can't kill any of the moderate fish with the knife... tips?
My suggestion on what to do would be the following:
1. Get fins, an O2 tank (one), a knife and a stillsuit. The order depends on what you find when.
2. Make yourself a habitat builder and construct a base somewhere. Just for good measure, put a beacon on top of it so you find it again.
3. Build a SeaGlide. Note that this is a power hungry device so you'll have to fuel it with copper and acid mushrooms fairly constantly.
4. Go explore.
Don't kill any fish really, especially Stalkers since later on you will need their teeth to craft enameled glass (and the stalker tooth are pretty irritating to gather).
When you get to a decent point away from the lifepod, build a base and gather silver, gold and copper as much as you can. Keep building items that help in exploration and go out and find the other blueprints (Seamoth parts, Cyclops parts etc) so you can keep exploring.
There's no real lethal weapon in the game, just vortex & gas torpedoes, repulsion rifle that pushes stuff away and the stasis rifle that temporarily traps bigger fish.
Wait..what?
All this time I was under the impression that my base would be an extension of the pod. I can make a base anywhere I want?
But whatever works for you, works for you. :)
Are you sure they don't stack?
Because my air was 45 and with 1 tank it went to 85 and then with the second to 125
Yeah, you can build anywhere you want, even inside caves if that's your thing. The only thing you need to keep in check is having enough power (non-powered bases don't provide air or working stations) and depth influences the integrity. The deeper you go, the more structural reinforcement you will need (adding glass windows decreases integrity, and building reinforcments increases it).
And you can have multiple bases too (be sure to use a beacon to mark their location though, wouldn't want to lose track of where they are).
My base is mostly about getting me reliable food and water so I can spend time exploring. I'm now planning another base, so I can broaden my reach.
Once you build a base, you can find and build an upgrade station. 2 upgraded tanks gives me quite a while under water. Speed fins mean I can leave the propulsion tool in the locker.
I get a total of 4 tanks when I am exploring deeper and when I am working in a wreck.
