No VR and I don't plan to have one..worth it?
For those of us without VR and with no immediate plans of getting a VR unit, would this game be worth it? I enjoy survival types and I like open world with a goal in mind. This seemed up my alley with the right price point on sale, but I'm unsure if my experience will be as great as someone with a VR unit.

It's both pretty and fun, and I play on lower graphics settings on a 50" TV 15' away from my couch. It would probably blow my mind on a 20" monitor in front of my face. VR would just be, not even icing, but a SECOND layer of icing on top of the one that's already there.

It's not gameplay designed around 1st-person POV experiences like the low-res trolls waving crap in your face like in that new VR RPG I keep seeing on Steam or anything. Think of this as a movie with decent 3D (i.e., VR) support, but totally still worth seeing and very enjoyable in standard IMAX or even just plain Widescreen.

Interesting comparison. :)

I always have the option of redund, so that's on my side.

Don't listen to the viveboy threads, they're just pissy the game isnt vive compatible.

The game is great, monitor or VR.

I had not read much into the forums. Just didnt want to buy a game that was centered too much around VR

I bought it and lost four hours on my first play. Looking forward to missing some serious sleep tonight.

ive got over 600 hours in the game, playing on a low end pc with a 23" monitor and ive NEVER once thought, i need to play this in VR, this game doesn't need it. the Subnautica Devs thankfully only focus on content and optimisation.

Yes, Subnautica was designed as a "traditional" game for monitors and keyboard/mouse. The VR experience is merely okay, but not nearly as good as games designed solely for VR from the ground up.

VR = Very Random

Vr is new, just cos a game says it does VR does not mean you HAVE to play it with VR , sure if you see a game that made for VR then thats something else, but just cos a game has VR in it, don't be afraid to buy it.

Thanks all.

Obviously I'm aware that the game wasn't MADE for VR, but they had mentioned early in development that VR was in their scope. I was unsure if it had continued to be this way, and it seems to me they released it optimized, well designed but for the PC experience in mind.

Thanks for the responses

It's definitely not made with a huge focus on VR.
I always saw VR as an additional option, rather than a core part of the game.
This is a personal opinion, but I feel Subnautica is one of the best (if not the best) open world survival game out there. VR or not, this game is a true gem - well worth picking up.

I played the game and loved it on my TV. With a rift it adds even more to an already fantastic game. The immersion and sense of presence is outstanding. The few VR games where you have a scuba mask on it adds to the feeling you are there underwater with a mask on. Also when you are swimming forward where you look is where you go. This was done very well imo. Movement is non motion sick as well for me. The game has really come a long way since it first hit steam. Its far more polished now, and the VR runs rather flawlessly. I do say it starts up awfully slow in VR though compared to non-VR. My 2 cents.

For this game, VR is simply something extra. hence why it's Oculus only at this time.

The good Vive experiences need to be built from the ground up and make full use of the room scale tech. Anything else is just trading mouselook for head-tracking.

Room scale controls aren't strictly needed unless the game is built for it. Sitting comfortable in one place is what we're already used to. Although the use of 2 controllers wouldn't be bad, I'm more than happy with mouse and keyboard.
