Good Sea Base Location
I already have a small sea base in the Safe Shallows, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions on where might be a good place to build a larger second sea base. I was thinking either the Grand Reef or Mushroom Forest, but I'm open to any suggestion. The Grand Reef looks like an easier place to build with fewer obstacles. However, I do have a Terraformer and I am willing to travel. The only criteria I have is that it should not be located too close to any Reaper Leviathan spawn location.

Near the northern Blood Kelp Zone? I think I know the place where you are referring. I am heading in that direction now to check it out. Thanks.

Yeah. Gonna build my main base there eventually, once I get a SEAMOTH and some vortex torpedoes (new save) to clear out the bone sharks. Vortex torpedoes are amazing if you can land the shot in their proximity. Taught a sandshark how to fly once.

I'm there now at coordinates -825, -185, +842. Very nice scenic view. A few nasty Bone Sharks and Crab Squid, but nothing too serious. Lots of resources. Building corridors between the mushrooms does not look very feasible, but there seems to be enough open space on the top of the cliff for a sizable base before you get into the Blood Kelp Zone biome.

There is also an undesignated zone with wide open spaces near the Blood Kelp Zone and Mushroom Forest, but I don't want to build in that area assuming the developers will eventually put something there which could wipe out my base.

Here's an idea: follow the example of the mushrooms. Don't build out, build up. Will certainly make a sweet base design. You could even run Solars on top if you make it big enough.

I really appreciate all the suggestions and advice.

The Jelly-Shroom Caves certainly captured my imagination, but ultimately I considered it to impractical. Especially since I wanted to keep the Cyclone near the base. Making an opening large enough would have been difficult, making navigating in and out of the base a tricky thing.

The Grand Reef and Sparse Reef biomes offered the largest open areas for building, with no nasty fauna, but because of that they were also pretty boring. Not much of a challenge.

The northern edge of the Mushroom Forest and southern edge of the Blood Kelp Zone seems to be the best location thus far. No Reaper Leviathans nearby, just a few nasty fauna, lots of resources, nice view, and in a somewhat challening location. Right now, that is the number one contender.

Just to be certain, I will spend a few more days (while I am collecting resources for my new base) checking out other biomes. So if there are any other places I should check out, please let me know. Thanks!

Another neat biome is the koosh. Full of bone sharks, amp eels, and geysers. So. Many. Geysers. Not much light hits the bottom and quite a few reapers spawn outside the edges on three sides tho.

As for my overall favorite biome all things considered: the Aurora. No hostile fauna, no real hazards, plenty of sunlight, and space to grow food.

For my seriously favorite biome: mushroom forest or lost river, could go either way.

Thanks. I will definitely be building up parts of the base. The Moonpools (I need two of them) will be at the bottom, but I will be stacking the Multipurpose rooms at least three high. There are no thermal vents nearby, so I will have to use a nuclear reactor, bioreactor, and solar panels. I haven't made my final decision yet, and won't until I finish collecting the resources I need for the base, but as of right now coordinates -825, -185, +842 look the most promising.

It will probably take me a week or two to finish construction of the base, but when it is done I will make a few screen shots and post them.

My current base is located just above the entrance to the JS caves, below the kelp forest (amazing view to look up at from below in glass corridors) and in front of the GP wreck site. I have plenty of space to expand, a docking area for the Cyclops, and a power grid tapping into the many thermals straight beneath the chasm. It is also in a central location, so reaching any biome and getting back takes the same amount of time any direction.

The main drawback is that the reefbacks in the area tend to go too close to the kelp area and will occasionally swim into the base constantly until I build something to fling them away. Biters are only a nuisance if you hang around outside too long.

I will check out the Koosh Zone now. I'm not too worried about sunlight getting down to the base, especially with lots of thermal vents in the area. The small nasty fauna make it more of a challenge, so they don't concern me. However, as I have said, I would really like to avoid the Reaper Leviathans. It looks like the Reaper Leviathans spawn north and south of the Kosh Zone, but don't enter into it. Other than that, I guess it comes down to the amount and type of resources and the view. Thanks for the suggestion, I will let you know.

I am in the Koosh Zone now. You are right about not being much light, but when you are 400+ meters down, I wouldn't expect there to be. However, this particular biome looks its best in the dark or at night. I particularly like the Amp Eels. Not too many Bone Sharks, and the Reaper Leviathans appear to stay out of the biome. There are also lots of resources, thermal vents, and open space for building.

It could be a bit challenging building this deep, and I like that aspect of it. The Koosh Zone has definitely made my short list of possible sites. Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestion. I built my original small base near the Kelp Forest as well, at the eastern edge of the Safe Shallows. I agree that the view is very nice, and it is indeed in a centralized location. However, now I am looking for a little bigger challenge. I have pretty much depleted all the resources in the Safe Shallows, so finding another biome with lots of resources is a necessity. I do enjoy a good view, which is the primary reason why the Grand Reef and Sparse Reef dropped off my list of possible building sites. Currently, it is between the northwestern Mushroom Forest and the Kosh Zone. Naturally, I will be bringing along some of the creeper kelp from the Kelp Forest and planting them in exterior grow boxes, it is too valuable of a commodity to leave behind, and I will need an alien containment tank full of Stalkers to harvest their teeth.

Both the Mushroom Forest and the Kosh Zone offer some interesting challenges, so it will be a difficult decision.

Well, I have made my choice. The Mushroom Forest won out. I have already started construction on the edge of the Mushroom Forest and the Blood Kelp Zone. The exact location is -826, -195, +836:

I also took Alpha393's advice by building up toward the surface. I've put a few solar panels on the roof of the highest Multipurpose Rooms to add a little more power.

This is the view from the Observation Room at night:

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and advice, it was greatly appreciated.
