Ryley microwaved a nutrient block for too long and it caused the Aurora reactor to overload.

I mean come on... It's Alterra!
Why should they waste time and money on training people when they can simply write shoddy manuals of how to operate a spacecraft?

It was a fluke, really. There was a hiccup in the flux capacitor, just as Mr. Fusion ran out of banana peels.

The odds were way against it ever crashing, but Alterra had unwisely installed an improbability drive.

Lack of land mass caused optical illusion that they were further from the planet than they thought. Of course it didn't help that Neebs & Co. at Alterra HQ were on an extended lunch break when Aurora requested planetary info.
