I'm sorry. This is apparently ?diving? terminology I am not familiar with.

As far as I know, an Iron Lung is a whole-body encasing respiratory assistance device that was used fairly extensively from the late 40's through the 60's to keep severe polio patients alive. I believe it was a trademark.

Is there a more recent definition??

Most likely a confusion with actually older technology. I would think diving bells[en.wikipedia.org] are what they really mean, which eventually became old style dive suits[rarehistoricalphotos.com].

I think a steam punk game would be cool if It did go that route, however with the futuristic setting of the game it doesn't make sense.

It's a reference to the game Iron Lung that's been popular lately.

Makes more sense. Hadn't heard of it before.

Its also the kind of game that probably wouldn't work for a game like Subnautica, just because the two games are related by being underwater and being in a Submarine doesn't mean the execution of a mod adaptation would instantly click, Iron Lung has it so you can't see the world around you except with a photo camera that's mounted to the sub you're piloting while Subnautica you can view your surroundings not only from the cockpits of the Seamoth and Cyclops but the Cyclops also has cameras that allows you to have more of a 360 view versus the 180 view the cockpit gives you, something a mod adaptation like Iron Lung would have to restrict heavily to make the adaptation work.

We don't need a medical device intended to breathe for people who cannot do it on their own

I had a quick look at Iron Lung, and I don't think it would work. The selling point of Iron Lung seems to be that the player
  • can't exit their sub
  • has only a very limited perception (map, coordinates, bearing, photographs) of where they are and what's outside
  • can't interact with anything outside
