From your lifepod swim parallel to the big ship and eventually you'll see it. Alternatively you can wait for lifepod messages which can give you directions to various locations around the map.

Does it matter how close I swim/drive to the ship? Like, If I swim too close will end up in the dead zone again?

Look for what appear to be clouds resting on the water. There's an island to the south, and another to the north.

If you've not repaired the radiation leak, don't go close. Once it 'blows up', you'll have the recipe for a radiation suit, and you can get as close as you wish. To find the island, however, face the ship from your life pod, and look to the left. Follow the horizon with your eyes, and, if you have even a halfway decent computer, you'll see a large bank of clouds. Swim toward the clouds and, eventually, they will clear and you'll see the island. Be SURE you swim to the left of the island until you reach a sandy beach, NOT to the right, take a beacon with you to mark the location, and your knife for protection. The crab thingies hurt.

I really don't want to lose another seamoth. Is the large bank of clouds kinda in the middle of North and North East? If I keep going more towards the NE, will I avoid the leviathans? Or would you more recommend I wait until I get the exact coordinates from the game?

If I remember correctly, there should not be any leviathans at the surface of the island, but there are a couple of leviathans surrounding the island. The closest one to the surface is uh like 40 -70m deep down i think?
Sunbeam beacon will give you exact coordinates or head toward the cloud: https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/254840103036959130/BE2181CAE2F63FD972469C9C5544860B5F642F74/

The game is actually pretty good about making sure you visit everywhere as long as you keep going to the pods you're given and collecting PDA's. Eventually you're sent directly to both islands with a marker on your hud.
I think the lost river and lava zones are the only places you have to find on your own.

actually the degasi base in the grand reef is the 3 place you need to find on your own but the other degasi bases give you some hints

You mean the proposed base location at 500m? I got a waypoint to that after visiting the base on the floating island and collecting the PDA's.
